An Imaginary Sit-Down with Al Horford and Brad Stevens
Brad Stevens: Al! My man, it’s always a good day when we get to chat. How’s everything with the family?
Al Horford: Hey Brad! Everyone’s doing great. You know how it is with little kids—never a dull moment! How about you? Missing the grind of the coaching life yet?
Brad Stevens: Ha! Between the front-office responsibilities and my own kids, I think I’ve got enough on my plate. But I do miss those strategic timeouts. Speaking of, how are you feeling about the season? The chemistry looks like it’s really clicking.
Al Horford: Oh, absolutely. We’ve got a great group this year. A lot of young talent and everyone’s hungry. Plus, the way you’ve set things up in the front office, the support system is just spot on.
Brad Stevens: Glad to hear it! You’re such a key leader for that locker room. Remember when we first brought you to Boston? I knew right then you’d be that stabilizing force on and off the court.
Al Horford: I appreciate that, Brad. You always knew how to get the most out of everyone. What’s it like making those roster decisions now? Seems like a different kind of pressure.
Brad Stevens: It’s definitely a different beast. I think a lot about fit and chemistry, just like I did as a coach, but now it’s also about long-term vision. Which brings me to ask—you signed on to be part of something special here again. What keeps bringing you back?
Al Horford: For me, it’s always been about the culture. Boston has this incredible mix of tradition and drive for greatness. Plus, teammates like Tatum and Brown—those guys push you to be better every day. It’s infectious.
Brad Stevens: Couldn’t agree more. Speaking of Tatum, what do you think of his evolution? He’s really taken on a new level of leadership, don’t you think?
Al Horford: Absolutely. He’s matured so much. His work ethic, his approach to the game—it’s inspiring. I try to support and mentor him where I can, but honestly, he’s becoming a leader in his own right.
Brad Stevens: That’s what I love to hear. We’re all about fostering that kind of growth here. Alright, before we wrap this up, I’ve gotta ask—favorite pre-game meal?
Al Horford: Oh, easy. Grilled chicken with some veggies, maybe a little quinoa. Keeps me light but energized. How about you? What’s the pre-game meal from the coach-days?
Brad Stevens: Would you believe PB&J? Super simple, but it was my go-to. You know, old habits die hard!
Al Horford: (Laughs) That’s awesome, Brad. Peanut butter and jelly; no wonder you were always cool under pressure!
Brad Stevens: Maybe! Well, Al, always great catching up. I’m looking forward to seeing what this season brings with you leading the pack.
Al Horford: Thanks, Brad. You know I’ll be giving it my all. Let’s make this a season to remember!
And with that, the two legends share a laugh and fist bump, their mutual respect and excitement for the future palpable.
