Alex Meyer Sits Down with Michael Phelps: Diving Deep into Open Water and Olympic Glory
Alex Meyer: Michael, it’s always great to catch up! We’ve both spent countless hours in the water, but our paths have been pretty different. How’s retirement treating you?
Michael Phelps: Hey Alex! Retirement is pretty fantastic, gotta say. More family time, but I do miss the thrill of competition sometimes. Speaking of different paths, I’ve always been in awe of your open water endurance. What drove you to take the plunge in open water swimming?
Alex Meyer: Haha, no pun intended, right? Honestly, I think it was the sheer unpredictability of open water that got me hooked. The ocean, with its waves, currents, and marine life, feels alive in a way a pool never did for me. Sounds pretty poetic, doesn’t it?
Michael Phelps: Absolutely, it does! I found my poetry in the pool, but I totally get that. The versatility you need for open water is mind-blowing. How do you mentally prep for a race where anything—nature, competitors, even jellyfish—can come at you?
Alex Meyer: It’s all about embracing the chaos. You can’t control the conditions, but you can control your reaction to them. It’s like Zen training. I’m curious though, how did you manage to stay at the top so consistently? 28 Olympic medals, man. It’s incredible!
Michael Phelps: Focus and discipline, I guess. Oh, and probably my extreme competitiveness, haha. But for real, I had an amazing team and a lot of support. Speaking of support, how has your support system helped you through the ups and downs, especially in such a niche sport?
Alex Meyer: My support system has been my rock. Between my family, coaches, and teammates, they’ve kept me grounded and motivated. Though, open water doesn’t get the same kind of spotlight, the close-knit community is tight and unbelievably supportive. Switching gears—did you ever consider trying open water?
Michael Phelps: Funny you ask. I actually thought about it a couple of times but never took the dive, so to speak. The variability is something I admire but also something that I find a bit intimidating. Plus, I have too many memories of being slowed down by waves at the beach, haha!
Alex Meyer: Totally understandable! It’s a wild ride in the open seas. So what does a typical day look like for you now? Still hitting the pool at all?
Michael Phelps: Yeah, I still swim, but it’s more for fun and fitness these days. Most of my time goes to family, business ventures, and mental health advocacy. Helping others and spending time with my kids have been the most rewarding chapters of my post-competition life. What about you? Any plans now that you’re moving beyond the competitive scene?
Alex Meyer: I’m diving into coaching and motivational speaking. Sharing my experiences and lessons from the world of open water swimming feels like the right next step. Plus, still enjoying the ocean, just without the race-day pressure!
Michael Phelps: Sounds like a perfect plan to me, Alex. Keep inspiring, both in and out of the water. Here’s to new adventures!
Alex Meyer: Cheers to that, Michael! Catch you around, maybe for a casual swim sometime?
Michael Phelps: Definitely. Take care, Alex!
