A Courtside Chat: Arvydas Sabonis & Dirk Nowitzki on Basketball, Legacy, and Life

Arvydas Sabonis: Dirk! Long time no see, my friend. How’s retirement treating you? Mowing the lawn and coaching your daughter’s soccer team yet?

Dirk Nowitzki: (laughs) Hey, Arvydas! Retirement is great. I actually tried mowing the lawn once and, man, it was tougher than guarding Shaq! How about you? Are you still shooting those sweet hook shots in Lithuania?

Arvydas Sabonis: Honestly, the only shots I’m taking these days are espresso shots down at the local café. But you know, the love for the game never really leaves you. Sometimes I still catch myself analyzing footwork when I watch the young guys on TV.

Dirk Nowitzki: Same here. It’s hard not to break down plays and wonder what could have been done differently. Tell me, Arvydas, when you look at today’s centers, what do you think? It’s all about the three-point shooting now, right?

Arvydas Sabonis: It’s a different era for sure. Back in our day, big guys were expected to control the paint and dominate the boards. Now, it seems like everyone needs to have a decent three-point shot. I mean, can you imagine if they asked us to shoot threes all the time?

Dirk Nowitzki: (laughs) Well, I kind of imagine it regularly—there’s even a move named after me, remember? But seriously, you’re right. The game has evolved. Big men are more versatile, but sometimes I miss those good old days of post-up battles.

Arvydas Sabonis: Versatility is great, but there’s something special about the raw power and skill of traditional big men. Speaking of evolution, how do you view our legacies? I feel like we both left our mark on the game in unique ways.

Dirk Nowitzki: Absolutely. I think our careers show that there’s more than one way to succeed in basketball. You were a beast in Europe and a constant impact player in the NBA. Your passing as a big man always amazed me. I tried to emulate that in my game too, you know.

Arvydas Sabonis: That’s a huge compliment coming from a legend like you. Your one-legged fadeaway is the stuff of nightmares for defenders! Speaking of legacy, how do you see your role in mentoring the next generation?

Dirk Nowitzki: I love getting involved with young players. Whether it’s mentoring or just sharing advice, it feels rewarding. I feel like I owe it to the game to help it grow. Have you been involved with any young talents back home?

Arvydas Sabonis: Oh yes, I try to stay involved with the Lithuanian Basketball Federation. We have some incredibly talented youngsters, and it’s essential to guide them and share our experiences. It’s like handing down a baton, ensuring the legacy continues.

Dirk Nowitzki: That’s wonderful to hear. The game is bigger than ever, but it’s our job to keep its spirit and history alive as well. Maybe one day, we’ll see a Sabonis-Nowitzki hybrid on the court!

Arvydas Sabonis: (laughs) That would be a sight to see! Until then, let’s just enjoy watching and contributing whenever we can. Dirk, always a pleasure chatting with you. Let’s not wait so long next time!

Dirk Nowitzki: Absolutely, Arvydas. Catch you courtside soon!
