Hoops and Strategy: A Conversation Between Bill Laimbeer and Gregg Popovich

Bill Laimbeer: Hey Gregg, great to catch up! I was just watching some of your old Spurs games. Man, what a dynasty you built. What’s the secret sauce to keeping a team at the top for so long?

Gregg Popovich: Bill, always a pleasure. Building a winning culture is all about consistency and adapting to the times. You know that just as well with your success in the WNBA. How are things with the Las Vegas Aces?

Bill Laimbeer: We’re doing great! The team is really coming together. It’s interesting, though. Coaching in the WNBA requires a different kind of approach than the NBA. I’ve had to learn a lot along the way. Ever think of crossing over to the women’s league?

Gregg Popovich: (chuckles) I’ve thought about it. Basketball is basketball, but as you’ve said, every league has its own nuances. What’s been the biggest adjustment for you?

Bill Laimbeer: Honestly, the level of communication. In the NBA, it was about managing egos and keeping guys motivated. In the WNBA, it’s a lot more collaborative. The players are incredibly receptive and eager to learn, which is a coach’s dream.

Gregg Popovich: That’s fascinating. I’ve always believed the best teams are the ones where everyone contributes to the strategy, not just the players executing. Speaking of strategy, your physical style in the ‘Bad Boys’ days—does any of that influence how you coach now?

Bill Laimbeer: Absolutely! Defense wins championships, right? I still preach toughness and grit, but I also have to adapt to the speed and skill of today’s game. What about you? With so many changes in the NBA—from three-point shooting to load management—how do you stay ahead?

Gregg Popovich: Constant learning. I surround myself with creative minds. We share ideas, experiment, and aren’t afraid to innovate. It’s one reason why I love watching other leagues and styles of play. There’s always something new to learn.

Bill Laimbeer: Speaking of learning, I’ve been watching international basketball a lot lately. Their ball movement and fundamentals are off the charts. Ever think the NBA should adopt some of their strategies?

Gregg Popovich: Absolutely. There’s so much value in international styles of play and coaching methods. We’re already seeing a lot of that influence with the influx of international players who bring diverse skills and perspectives to the game.

Bill Laimbeer: Well said, Gregg. It’s been great talking shop with you. Always learn something new. Let’s make sure our paths cross again soon—maybe in the finals!

Gregg Popovich: Definitely, Bill. Keep pushing those boundaries. The game needs minds like yours. Until next time!
