Bob McAdoo: Hey Kareem, great to sit down and chat. It’s not often we get to catch up like this. How have things been?
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Good to see you, Bob. Things have been fantastic. Writing, speaking engagements, staying busy. You’ve always been one of the sharpest shooters I’ve known—what have you been up to?
Bob McAdoo: Oh, you know, a little coaching here and there. Why stop at playing, right? I enjoy helping the next generation of ballers find their stroke.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Absolutely. Your scoring touch was legendary. Speaking of which, what do you think about the evolution of the three-point shot in today’s game?
Bob McAdoo: It’s wild, man. Back in our day, we had to work so hard for those mid-range shots—bruising through the paint, fighting for position. Now, kids pull up from 30 feet like it’s nothing. You ever imagine hitting threes would be such a big part of the game?
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: (Laughs) Not really. I was more concerned with perfecting my skyhook. The three-pointer adds a new level of complexity, though. Adapting to the times is crucial.
Bob McAdoo: No doubt. And we’ve seen it pay off. Teams adapting to the analytics and utilizing the three-pointer can turn a game’s momentum in a heartbeat. But let’s be real, I’d still take a skyhook any day.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: It’s all about balance. Even with all these long-range shots, you can’t ignore the art of a well-executed move in the post. Speaking of balance, how’s the transition from player to coach been for you?
Bob McAdoo: Honestly, it’s been amazing. Coaching gives you a different kind of high. Watching a young player hit a shot or make a defensive play you taught them—it’s as good as scoring points yourself. Plus, it’s rewarding to be a mentor because we had great mentors coming up, right?
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Absolutely. John Wooden was a guiding light for me, both on and off the court. Have you seen a player recently that reminds you of how we used to play?
Bob McAdoo: I’d say Kevin Durant. His ability to score from anywhere on the court, and with such efficiency, is reminiscent of what we prided ourselves on. He’s a mix of new and old school.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Interesting you mentioned Durant. He’s got that versatility and height advantage too. It’s always fascinating to see how the game evolves and yet, some qualities remain timeless.
Bob McAdoo: Indeed. Regardless of era, the fundamentals and passion for the game are constants. Speaking of constants, have you been working on any new projects?
