A Conversation with Bud Wilkinson and Barry Switzer
Bud Wilkinson: Barry, it’s always a pleasure. Every time we get together, it feels like old times. Hard to believe how far coaching has come since our days on the sidelines.
Barry Switzer: Absolutely, Bud! I remember watching your teams dominate at Oklahoma. Three national championships, man. That’s a legacy. How’d you keep your cool under all that pressure?
Bud Wilkinson: Ha! The secret was coffee, a lot of coffee. Seriously though, I just focused on the fundamentals and instilled discipline in my players. They knew what was expected, and they delivered. What about you? You had some wild seasons with the Sooners yourself.
Barry Switzer: (laughs) Wild is an understatement! We had some characters, but like you, I believed in letting them be themselves while sticking to a solid game plan. Did you ever think college football would evolve the way it has?
Bud Wilkinson: Not in the slightest. The game now is more about speed and athleticism. I look at these athletes today, and I’m just in awe. Remember when we couldn’t even imagine a quarterback running a 4.5 40-yard dash?
Barry Switzer: Exactly! And don’t even get me started on the facilities. We had basic weight rooms; now they have whole complexes with everything you can dream of. Can you imagine what we could have done with today’s technology and resources?
Bud Wilkinson: It’s mind-blowing, indeed. But some things never change, Barry. The heart, the grit, the drive those kids bring—that’s timeless.
Barry Switzer: You nailed it, Bud. And that’s why we love the game, right? By the way, do you catch many games nowadays?
Bud Wilkinson: Oh, every chance I get. I’ve even dabbled in a bit of commentary here and there. It keeps me connected to the sport. How about you?
Barry Switzer: Still heavily involved, you know me. Can’t stay away from the action. Coaching in the NFL was a wild ride, but college ball is where my heart is. Hey, speaking of commentary, ever thought of writing another book?
Bud Wilkinson: You know, it has crossed my mind. There are so many stories left to tell. Maybe I’ll write about our ‘what if’ scenarios. Like, what if we had today’s training methods back then? That could be interesting.
Barry Switzer: I’d read it in a heartbeat! Bud, it’s been great chatting with you. Let’s grab coffee sometime and dive into those stories. Who knows? Maybe we’ll discover a few more winning strategies!
Bud Wilkinson: Absolutely, Barry. Here’s to the past, present, and future of football. Let’s catch up soon!
