Inside the Game: A Chat with Casey Short and Kelley O’Hara
Casey Short: Hey Kelley! Great to see you. Can you believe how much the game has changed since we started?
Kelley O’Hara: Casey, it’s wild! From the tactics to the visibility of women’s soccer—it’s like a whole new world. Remember when playing in front of packed stadiums was like a dream?
Casey: Totally! It feels surreal sometimes. Speaking of packed stadiums, what was going through your mind during that World Cup final?
Kelley: Oh man, the adrenaline was off the charts. I kept thinking, “This is it, Kel—everything you’ve trained for.” How about the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL)? It’s grown so much. How do you feel being a part of that evolution?
Casey: Proud, mainly! It’s incredible to see younger players coming in with so many more opportunities than we had. And the international talent joining the NWSL just ups the game even more!
Kelley: Absolutely. And it’s not just about the game on the field. The way we’ve been able to use our platforms to advocate for equal pay and better conditions—it’s huge.
Casey: That’s something I’m really passionate about. Every little step toward equity makes a big difference. Plus, it’s awesome to see so many fans getting behind these movements. Did you see the turnout for the recent friendly? Packed stands!
Kelley: I did, and it was heartwarming. You can tell the fans are invested not just in the sport, but in the players’ journeys too. Speaking of journeys, any advice you’d give to younger players entering the league?
Casey: Oh, definitely. I’d say keep your head down and work hard, but also don’t be afraid to speak up. Building your skills is important, but so is using your voice to make an impact off the field.
Kelley: That’s gold right there. It’s about finding balance—being as fierce in your activism as you are in your game. So, what’s next for Casey Short? Any exciting endeavors?
Casey: Right now, I’m focusing a lot on community outreach and mentoring the next generation. Plus, writing—maybe a book someday? Who knows! How about you?
Kelley: That sounds amazing! For me, it’s podcasting and working on some media projects. Always looking to highlight more voices in women’s sports.
Casey: Love it, Kelley! It’s all about lifting each other up. Here’s to many more milestones and epic games ahead! Thanks for the chat!
Kelley: Always a pleasure, Casey. Cheers to that!
And with that, Casey and Kelley high-five, energized and ready to tackle the world both on and off the field.
