An Afternoon Chat with Catherine Ndereba and Eliud Kipchoge

Eliud Kipchoge: Catherine, it’s such a pleasure to catch up with you! It’s not every day I get to have a heart-to-heart with the “Catherine the Great” of marathoning.

Catherine Ndereba: Oh, Eliud, you flatter me! Coming from the man who broke the two-hour marathon barrier, that means a lot. How have you been keeping up with everything? You seem unstoppable!

Eliud Kipchoge: Thank you! I’ve been well, just focusing on my training and always aiming to inspire. But I have to ask, how did you manage to stay at the top of your game for so long? You have such an impressive record, from the New York City to Boston Marathons!

Catherine Ndereba: Consistency and discipline, my friend. Every day is a chance to be better than the day before. And I guess a bit of stubbornness helps too. Running has always been my passion, and I’ve loved every minute of it, even the grueling training sessions.

Eliud Kipchoge: That sounds familiar! I think a true runner never backs down from a challenge. Speaking of passion, which race would you say holds the most special memories for you?

Catherine Ndereba: Ah, that’s a tough one! But if I had to choose, it would be my first victory at the Boston Marathon in 2000. The crowd, the energy, the historical significance of the race – it was surreal. And then defending my title the following year just solidified my love for that course.

Eliud Kipchoge: Boston definitely has its own charm. I can see why it left such an impact. By the way, how do you feel about the evolution of marathon running and the technological advancements we’ve seen in recent years?

Catherine Ndereba: It’s amazing to witness! From better training programs to shoes that give you that extra edge, the sport has come a long way. But at the end of the day, it’s the runner’s heart and determination that make the difference. No technology can replicate sheer willpower.

Eliud Kipchoge: Absolutely! The mental aspect is crucial. Speaking of which, do you have any pre-race rituals or mantras that kept you focused before a big race?

Catherine Ndereba: Definitely! I always took a moment to remind myself of the journey – all the training and sacrifices. And I’d say a little prayer, asking for strength and endurance. It grounded me and kept me centered. What about you?

Eliud Kipchoge: I like to visualize the race – every step, every turn. I imagine crossing the finish line and the joy that follows. It keeps me motivated and ready to tackle any challenge. We may have different approaches, but it all boils down to the same thing: a burning desire to be the best.

Catherine Ndereba: So true, Eliud. It’s been wonderful reminiscing and sharing our experiences. Here’s to many more miles and inspiring the next generation of runners!

Eliud Kipchoge: Hear, hear! To more miles and more memories. Until next time, Catherine – keep inspiring!

Catherine Ndereba: You too, Eliud. Keep making history!
