Imaginary Discussion Between David Montgomery and Jane Goodall
David Montgomery: Jane, it’s such a pleasure to sit down with you. Your work with primates and my deep dive into soils may seem worlds apart, but I think we both feel strongly about the interconnectivity of natural systems.
Jane Goodall: Absolutely, David. And I must say, your book “Growing a Revolution” was quite an eye-opener for me. I couldn’t help drawing parallels between the deteriorating soils you described and the deforestation impacting the chimpanzee habitats I’ve been fighting to protect.
David Montgomery: You hit the nail on the head, Jane. Soil health is a foundation for so many ecosystems, just as forest health is crucial for animal habitats. When one crumbles, the ripple effects are profound. I’ve noticed that rebuilding healthy soils can regenerate entire ecosystems, much like your reforestation efforts have transformed chimp habitats.
Jane Goodall: Exactly. When I started the Roots & Shoots program, it was all about teaching young people the importance of taking care of their environment, much like a gardener nourishes the soil. If we give nature a chance, she can heal herself marvelously. What inspires you the most about the regenerative agriculture movement?
David Montgomery: It’s definitely seeing the land come back to life. Fields that used to be dust bowls turning green, full of earthworms and microbes again—it’s awe-inspiring. Farmers reclaiming their sense of purpose and pride in stewarding the land is incredibly motivating. What about you, Jane? What keeps you going in your conservation work?
Jane Goodall: The wonderful young people I meet around the world who are dedicated to making a difference. Their energy and optimism are contagious. And, of course, the moments I share with chimpanzees in the wild—it grounds me and renews my commitment to protect their future.
David Montgomery: It’s fascinating how our passions, though different in specifics, align so closely in philosophy. We’re both advocates for nurturing what nature has to offer, rather than exploiting it. Any parting thoughts you’d like to share?
Jane Goodall: I think it’s crucial that we continue to spread the word. Your work sheds light on how proper soil management can feed the world sustainably, while mine shows the importance of preserving wildlife. Together, we can inspire a holistic approach to caring for our planet.
David Montgomery: Couldn’t agree more, Jane. Here’s to a future where humans, plants, animals, and soils all thrive together.
Jane Goodall: Cheers to that, David.
