Inside the World of Tennis: A Chat Between Denis Istomin and Roger Federer
Roger Federer: Hey Denis, great to catch up with you! How has life been treating you off the court?
Denis Istomin: Hey Roger! Life’s been pretty good, though I’ve got to say, it’s quite different from the high-adrenaline tournament days. I’ve been enjoying some downtime and exploring new hobbies. How about yourself?
Roger Federer: Same here! Retirement has given me a lot more family time and the chance to focus on my foundation. You know, it’s interesting, we spend so much of our lives on court, and then, suddenly we have all this time. Have you picked up anything new?
Denis Istomin: Absolutely, I’ve started dabbling in cooking. Turns out, hitting a perfect serve is somewhat similar to grilling a perfect steak—timing is everything! Also, been spending a lot of time watching football. Got myself a tiny football team at home now. How about you, any new ventures?
Roger Federer: Haha, that’s interesting! Cooking is a skill I definitely need to improve. For me, it’s been a lot of golf. It’s a different kind of challenge but keeps the competitive spirit alive. And I started playing some charity matches too, which is always fulfilling.
Denis Istomin: Charity matches are a wonderful idea. You’ve always been an ambassador for the sport and beyond. Speaking of which, do you miss the intense rivalry and the whole atmosphere of the tour?
Roger Federer: Of course, I do. The exhilarating crowd, the nail-biting tie-breakers—it’s hard to replicate that rush. But at the same time, I don’t miss the travel grind. How about you? Got any future plans to stay connected with tennis?
Denis Istomin: Definitely. I’m planning to get involved in coaching and maybe even start an academy. Tennis has given me so much, and I’d love to give back to the younger generation. Plus, it’ll keep me on my toes, literally and figuratively. Any plans to coach your kids into the next Federer dynasty?
Roger Federer: Hahaha, they do play a bit, but I’m not pushing them too hard. I want them to find their own passions. But who knows, they might surprise us someday. Last question—if you could go back and relive one match from your career, which one would it be?
Denis Istomin: Oh, that’s a tough one. Probably my win over Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open in 2017. That match was unforgettable for many reasons. And you? Which one would you choose?
Roger Federer: There are quite a few, but if I had to pick, maybe the 2009 Wimbledon final against Roddick. That was a match that defined a lot for me. Though, in reality, it’s the journey rather than a single match that stands out. Denis, it was great catching up. Let’s do this more often!
Denis Istomin: Absolutely, Roger. Until next time! And let’s make sure our paths cross on a golf course or football field soon!
