A Poolside Chat: Ella Nelson and Coach Emily Discuss Training and Life
Ella Nelson: Hey Coach Emily! Can you believe we’re gearing up for another big meet already? Time flies when you’re in the water, am I right?
Coach Emily: Absolutely, Ella! It feels like just yesterday we were strategizing for the last competition. Speaking of which, your last 200m freestyle was phenomenal. What was going through your mind during that race?
Ella Nelson: Thanks, Coach! Honestly, it felt like I was in a zone. All those early morning practices and visualizations really helped. But, on a lighter note, I was also thinking about what kind of pizza I was going to demolish after the race!
Coach Emily: [Laughs] Classic Ella! Always got that balance between dedication and enjoying the little things. Speaking of balance, how have you been managing your training with all the media attention you’ve been getting lately?
Ella Nelson: It’s been a whirlwind for sure. But I’ve learned to keep perspective. Training always comes first, and I make sure to carve out time for myself. Plus, our team has been super supportive, which makes a huge difference.
Coach Emily: It’s great to hear you’re maintaining that balance. I remember when I was a competitive swimmer, staying grounded was half the battle. Any new routines or rituals you’ve adopted recently?
Ella Nelson: Yeah, I actually started journaling. It’s been amazing for my mental game. Writing down my goals, reflecting on practices, and even jotting down random thoughts. Oh, and I’ve been dabbling in yoga—who knew flexibility could be so zen?
Coach Emily: That’s awesome, journaling and yoga are both fantastic ways to enhance performance. I might have to start incorporating some yoga into our cool-down sessions. What do you think?
Ella Nelson: That sounds perfect! Our whole squad could benefit from it. By the way, Coach, any secret tips or tricks up your sleeve for the next race?
Coach Emily: Well, I’ve been thinking about adding some new drills to improve your underwaters. Plus, we’ve gotta get you more pre-race popcorn—the superstition that works, right?
Ella Nelson: [Laughs] You know it! Popcorn before race day is my golden ticket. Alright, Coach, let’s crush this meet! And maybe celebrate with some yoga and pizza after?
Coach Emily: Deal! Let’s give it our all, Ella. And remember, it’s not just about winning—it’s about pushing ourselves to be better every single day. Let’s go make some waves!
Ella Nelson: Let’s do it, Coach! To more records, memories, and, of course, pizza!
Coach Emily: Cheers to that!
