Emily Engstler Discusses Growth, Basketball, and Beyond with Katie Smith

Emily Engstler: Hey Katie, it’s awesome to finally get some time to chat with you. I’ve always admired your career journey from a player to a coach. How did you navigate that transition?

Katie Smith: Thanks, Emily! It’s been a wild ride, for sure. Transitioning from player to coach wasn’t easy, but I always felt a deep passion for sharing what I’ve learned. How about you, though? From college ball to the WNBA – what’s that been like?

Emily Engstler: Oh, it’s been quite the journey! The level of competition, the pace, the physicality – everything is just ramped up. But honestly, I’m loving every bit of it. There’s so much room to grow and I’m learning every day from my teammates and coaches.

Katie Smith: That’s fantastic to hear. Growth is key. Speaking of which, I’ve been following your progress closely. The way you’ve worked on your versatility on the court, it’s really impressive. How do you approach your development in the game?

Emily Engstler: I always remind myself that there’s no shortcut to hard work. I focus on different aspects of my game in each training. Whether it’s defense, shooting, or playmaking, I aim to be as well-rounded as possible. And I have to say, having role models like you to look up to really keeps me motivated.

Katie Smith: That’s a great mindset to have. Speaking of motivation, what keeps you driven outside of basketball? Everyone needs that balance, you know?

Emily Engstler: Definitely. Off the court, I’m really into art and community work. I love painting; it’s a great way to express myself and unwind. Plus, I’m passionate about giving back, especially to young girls who want to pursue sports. How about you, Katie? What keeps you going?

Katie Smith: That’s wonderful, Emily. For me, it’s family, staying active, and continuing to learn new things. I’m always looking to grow not just as a coach, but as a person. Speaking of learning, do you have any advice for the young players looking to make it big?

Emily Engstler: I’d say, never stop dreaming and stay resilient. There will be ups and downs, but it’s all part of the journey. Stay true to yourself, work hard, and surround yourself with positive influences. And of course, never forget to enjoy the game! After all, that’s why we started playing, right?

Katie Smith: Absolutely, enjoying the game is at the core of everything. It was great chatting with you, Emily. Keep up the fantastic work and continue being a role model on and off the court.

Emily Engstler: Thanks so much, Katie. Your words mean a lot. Let’s keep inspiring the next generation together!
