A Marathon Chat: Grete Waitz and Eliud Kipchoge
Grete Waitz: Eliud, it’s so good to sit down and chat with you. I’ve been looking forward to this. Your recent performances have been nothing short of extraordinary! How do you keep pushing the boundaries?
Eliud Kipchoge: Grete, the pleasure is all mine. You’ve been such an inspiration to so many runners, including myself. To answer your question, it’s all about discipline and believing that no human is limited. How about you? How did you keep breaking records back in your day?
Grete Waitz: Ah, the good old days! For me, it was more about passion and enjoying the run. That feeling of crossing the finish line first, especially in New York—it’s unmatched. Speaking of boundaries, your sub-2-hour marathon was mind-blowing! Walk me through that day.
Eliud Kipchoge: Well, it felt like the culmination of years of hard work and a lot of scientific support. Every single second counted. The whole attempt was meticulously planned, from the pace-setting to the nutrition. It was as much a mental challenge as it was a physical one. But let’s not forget your nine New York Marathon victories! How did you maintain such consistency?
Grete Waitz: Nine New York Marathons were indeed a journey. Consistency came from loving what I did and the support of my husband, Jack. He was my coach and partner through it all. It also helped that New York has this incredible energy—it’s infectious and keeps you going.
Eliud Kipchoge: The support system is crucial, isn’t it? I can definitely relate to that. My trainer, Patrick Sang, has been a huge influence on my career. It’s incredible how much of a team effort running can be. So, what advice would you give to aspiring marathoners today?
Grete Waitz: I’d say to focus on the joy of running and not just the competition. Embrace the process and the journey will be much more fulfilling. Train smart, listen to your body, and don’t forget to have fun along the way.
Eliud Kipchoge: Absolutely! Enjoying the journey is key. We often get caught up in times and numbers, but the love for the sport should always come first. That’s such timeless advice, Grete. I’m honored to be able to carry the torch forward.
Grete Waitz: The honor is mine, Eliud. Talking to you reminds me of why I fell in love with running in the first place. Keep inspiring the world, one race at a time!
