An Evening Chats with Hugo Dellien and Gustavo Kuerten

Gustavo Kuerten (Guga): Hola, Hugo! It’s great to finally sit down with the new rising star from Bolivia. How’s everything on your end?

Hugo Dellien: Hey Guga! Man, I’m just trying to keep up! I grew up idolizing players like you, so chatting with you is a bit surreal. Everything’s good though. How’s life been treating you post-retirement?

Guga: (Laughs) Retirement is treating me well, Hugo. I get to surf and enjoy the beach more often now! But enough about me, let’s talk about your amazing run at the French Open last year. What was going through your mind facing such top players?

Hugo: Standing across the net from top players was definitely nerve-wracking! But stepping onto the courts at Roland Garros has always been a dream. I just kept reminding myself of all the hard work and sacrifices made to get there. Tell me, do you have any rituals before you step onto the clay?

Guga: Clay courts, my old friend! I used to have a playlist of Brazilian music that would get me into the zone. And I always made sure to visualize my matches. What about you? Any pre-match rituals or lucky charms?

Hugo: Plenty! I listen to some classic Bolivian folk songs before big matches to stay grounded. Also, I have this old towel from my junior days that I can’t leave behind. Helps keep me calm and reminds me of my journey.

Guga: Sounds like you’ve got a great routine going. Speaking of journeys, you’ve been an incredible ambassador for Bolivian tennis. How does it feel to represent your country on such big stages?

Hugo: Thank you, Guga. It’s a huge honor, honestly. Sometimes, it’s a lot of pressure, but it’s also incredibly inspiring. I want to show young Bolivian athletes that it’s possible to compete at the highest levels. Just like how you did for Brazilian tennis.

Guga: And you’re doing an excellent job, Hugo. It’s all about passion and perseverance. Any upcoming tournaments you’re particularly excited about?

Hugo: Absolutely! I’m gearing up for the clay court season. Monte Carlo and Barcelona are on my radar. But I’ve got a special spot for the French Open; that’s the one I want to really make my mark in. How about advice? Any tips for surviving the grueling clay season?

Guga: Ah, the clay season. It’s essential to stay patient and focused. Endurance is key – both mentally and physically. Don’t forget to enjoy every moment, even the tough ones. That’s where the growth happens.

Hugo: Wise words, Guga. Thanks a ton for the advice and the chat! It’s been a blast, and incredibly motivating. Hope to make you proud this season!

Guga: You’re already making us proud, Hugo. Keep playing your heart out. Vamos!

Hugo: Vamos!
