An Imaginary Poolside Chat with Inge de Bruijn and Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps: Hey Inge! It’s been ages. What have you been up to since retiring from professional swimming?

Inge de Bruijn: Hi Michael! It’s great to see you. I’ve been exploring a few different passions actually, from motivational speaking to getting involved in some fitness ventures. How about you? I see you haven’t slowed down one bit!

Michael Phelps: You know me, always busy with something. I’ve been working on mental health advocacy and spending quality time with my family. Swim life never really leaves you, though, does it?

Inge de Bruijn: Absolutely. The discipline and routine we learned in the pool stick with you forever. Speaking of which, any advice for young swimmers out there trying to make it big?

Michael Phelps: I’d say focus on enjoying the journey. It’s easy to get lost in the pressure of competition. Having fun and finding joy in every stroke is key. What about you? You’ve been through so much, your advice must be gold!

Inge de Bruijn: I’d tell them not to be afraid of pushing their limits but to also listen to their bodies. Balance is everything. And of course, never underestimate the power of a positive mindset.

Michael Phelps: That’s solid advice, Inge. By the way, did you follow the last Olympics? Some incredible performances, right?

Inge de Bruijn: Of course! It was absolutely thrilling. Seeing new records being set and the energy of the new generation is exhilarating. I must admit though, it gave me a bit of nostalgia for the old racing days!

Michael Phelps: I can relate! It’s always a bit surreal watching from the sidelines. But it’s also fantastic to see the sport evolving. Any athletes caught your eye in particular?

Inge de Bruijn: Oh definitely. I was really impressed by Caeleb Dressel and Katie Ledecky. Their performances were simply out of this world. It’s inspiring to see how they’ve pushed the boundaries of what we thought was possible.

Michael Phelps: I feel the same way. It just makes you think about the future of swimming and how bright it is. So, do you ever hop into the pool just for fun these days?

Inge de Bruijn: Oh, for sure. I still swim regularly, but now it’s more about staying fit and enjoying the water rather than training for the next big meet. How about you?

Michael Phelps: Same here. It’s my go-to for relaxation and staying in shape. Plus, it’s great for mental clarity. There’s just something so calming about the water.

Inge de Bruijn: Absolutely. Swimming will always be a part of us. Here’s to inspiring the next generation and enjoying every lap we take!

Michael Phelps: Cheers to that, Inge!

End of discussion. What will these legends inspire next?
