An Engaging Discussion with Jessica Long and Adam Rippon
Adam Rippon: Hey Jessica, it’s so cool to finally sit down and chat with you! You know, I’ve always been amazed at your journey. Swimming in the Paralympics and winning 23 medals is no small feat. What’s been the most memorable part of your career so far?
Jessica Long: Hey Adam, it’s awesome to be here with you too! Gosh, it’s tough to pick just one moment. But I’d say my first Paralympic Games in Athens when I was just 12. That was such a whirlwind—I was so young and wide-eyed, and winning three gold medals there completely changed my life. What about you? You’ve also had such an inspiring career in figure skating.
Adam Rippon: Thanks, Jessica! For me, it’s probably getting to compete at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Landing a clean program and winning the team bronze medal were spectacular, but more than that, it was having the platform to speak out on what I believe in and being my authentic self. Now, speaking of authenticity, your documentary “Long Way Home” really struck a chord with me. What was it like letting the world into your personal and family journey?
Jessica Long: Oh, “Long Way Home” was an emotional rollercoaster for sure. It was a deep dive into my adoption story and getting to meet my birth family in Russia. It was nerve-wracking but also incredibly healing. It reminded me that our stories, no matter how challenging, shape who we are. I bet you can relate with your openness about your journey and identity.
Adam Rippon: Absolutely, sharing our vulnerabilities can be powerful. By the way, I’ve seen some of your incredible training routines, and I’m curious, how do you stay so motivated and balanced with such a hectic schedule?
Jessica Long: Haha, a mixture of coffee, passion, and a supportive team! But seriously, setting small, achievable goals keeps me focused, and remembering why I started in the first place. Swimming gives me joy and a sense of purpose. Plus, when times get tough, thinking about the incredible community that supports me, like my fans and family, keeps me going. What about you? How do you balance your training with all your media and advocacy work?
Adam Rippon: It’s a juggling act for sure! I find that prioritizing what’s truly important helps. Whether it’s training, advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, or working on my latest book, I make sure to inject things that bring me joy into my daily routine, like catching up on my favorite shows or spending time with friends. It’s all about balance. Speaking of which, any exciting projects or plans coming up for you?
Jessica Long: Actually, yes! I’m working on a new initiative to bring adaptive sports to more schools and communities. Inclusivity in sports is something I’m incredibly passionate about. There’s so much untapped potential out there, and I want to help kids with disabilities find their love for sports too. It’s going to be a big project, but I’m super excited about it. And you, Adam, what’s next on your horizon?
Adam Rippon: That sounds amazing, Jessica! For me, I’m diving into more hosting and TV work, and I’m also in the initial stages of launching a foundation to support young athletes in their personal and professional development. It’s all about giving back and helping foster the next generation. Well, this has been such a great chat. Let’s keep inspiring and breaking those boundaries!
Jessica Long: Absolutely, Adam! It was great catching up! Let’s make some waves and keep showing the world what’s possible!
