Imaginary Conversation Between Joan Benoit Samuelson and Shalane Flanagan
Joan Benoit Samuelson: Hey Shalane! It’s so good to catch up with you. It’s been a whirlwind since we last met, right?
Shalane Flanagan: Oh, absolutely, Joan! It’s always inspiring to chat with a legend like you. Your pioneering victories still blow my mind. Remember when you won the first women’s Olympic marathon in Los Angeles in 1984?
Joan Benoit Samuelson: How could I forget? It was a defining moment not just for me, but for women’s athletics. Speaking of turning points, your win at the 2017 New York City Marathon was phenomenal! How did it feel to break that tape?
Shalane Flanagan: Honestly, it was surreal. I was on such an emotional high; it felt like time had slowed down. Your influence was certainly a driving force for me. If not for your trailblazing efforts, who knows where women’s running would be today?
Joan Benoit Samuelson: That’s very kind of you to say, Shalane. But truly, it’s runners like you who keep the momentum going. I think it’s fantastic that you’ve transitioned into coaching, supporting the next generation of runners. How’s that been treating you?
Shalane Flanagan: It’s been incredibly rewarding. Watching young athletes push their limits and achieve their dreams reminds me of why I fell in love with this sport in the first place. But tell me, Joan, how do you keep that same fire burning after so many years?
Joan Benoit Samuelson: For me, it’s about staying connected to the running community. Every race I run, every athlete I meet, fuels my passion. And of course, I can’t discount the sheer joy of running itself. It’s been my lifelong companion. Any exciting projects in the works for you?
Shalane Flanagan: I’m working on a new cookbook focused on fueling for endurance athletes. Food and fitness go hand-in-hand, and I want to share the recipes that have kept me going strong. What about you, Joan? Any marathons on the horizon?
Joan Benoit Samuelson: Well, you know me—I can’t stay away from the starting line for too long! I’ve got my eyes on the Boston Marathon next year. It’s one of my favorite races, and the energy there is unmatched. It’s the perfect setting to challenge myself once again.
Shalane Flanagan: That’s incredible! Boston holds a special place in every marathoner’s heart. I’ll be cheering you on, Joan. Your enduring spirit continues to inspire all of us, especially me.
Joan Benoit Samuelson: Thank you, Shalane. It means a lot coming from you. Let’s keep inspiring each other and the next generation. Here’s to the roads ahead!
Shalane Flanagan: Cheers to that, Joan. Run on!
