A Coffee Chat with Kelly Holmes and Mo Farah: Embracing New Challenges

Kelly Holmes: Mo, it’s so great to catch up! Long time no see! How have things been with you?

Mo Farah: Kelly! It’s always a pleasure. Things have been fantastic but busy as ever. Between training, family life, and juggling a few new projects, there’s hardly a moment to spare. But you, Dame Kelly Holmes, are the one with the truly remarkable story. What have you been up to lately?

Kelly Holmes: Oh, you know me, Mo. Always trying to stay active and inspired. I’ve been focusing on my mental health advocacy work and trying to inspire young athletes. Also, venturing into new areas—ever thought about writing a cookbook? It’s been quite a journey!

Mo Farah: A cookbook? Now that’s something I didn’t see coming. What inspired you to take that route?

Kelly Holmes: Well, I’ve always believed in the power of nutrition and how it impacts performance and mental well-being. Plus, during my training days, experimenting with recipes was one way to unwind. It’s fun sharing that aspect of my life now, and it seems people quite enjoy it!

Mo Farah: That’s brilliant, Kelly. Nutrition is so often overlooked. It’s all about those little edges, right? For me, it’s been about giving back. Working with my charity, the Mo Farah Foundation, and trying to make a difference in the lives of young kids.

Kelly Holmes: Absolutely, Mo. I’ve seen the amazing work you’re doing. It’s so gratifying to give back. Speaking of which, how’s your marathon training going? Any tips for a middle-distance runner like me considering such a feat?

Mo Farah: Ah, the marathon! It’s a different beast compared to middle-distance, for sure. Patience and pacing are key. Start slow, build gradually, and listen to your body. Transitioning was tough, but I found that mental toughness we learned on the track really helps.

Kelly Holmes: Good to know! Maybe one day I’ll give it a go. I miss the adrenaline of competition. Have you found any new hobbies or passions outside of running?

Mo Farah: Actually, yes! I’ve taken up a bit of cooking myself—looks like we’re on the same wavelength there. And believe it or not, I’m learning to play the guitar. It’s a great stress reliever.

Kelly Holmes: Really? That’s awesome! We should start a runners’ band (laughs). Or maybe a cooking show featuring athletes. Imagine the fun we’d have!

Mo Farah: Now there’s an idea! “Chef Athletes” — it has a nice ring to it. All jokes aside, it’s fantastic to see how life after professional sports can open up so many new doors. Here’s to new challenges and continuing to inspire.

Kelly Holmes: Absolutely, Mo. Cheers to that. And who knows, maybe our paths will cross in the most unexpected places. Until then, keep being amazing!

Mo Farah: You too, Kelly. Always an inspiration. Until next time!
