A Courtside Chat with Lauren Betts and Sue Bird

Lauren Betts: Hey Sue! It’s such an honor to sit down and chat with you. I’ve been following your career for as long as I can remember. How’s life after retirement treating you?

Sue Bird: Hey Lauren! Thanks, that means a lot coming from a rising star like you. Retirement’s been a ride – a bit weird not being on the court, but it’s given me time to explore other passions. Speaking of rising stars, how’s the college basketball scene treating you?

Lauren Betts: It’s been an amazing journey so far. Balancing school with basketball is tough, but totally worth it. The competition is fierce and it’s pushing me to be better every day. So, what have you been up to with all your free time now?

Sue Bird: I’ve been diving into broadcasting a bit, which is fun, but definitely a new challenge. Plus, spending quality time with family and friends, traveling… the stuff I couldn’t do as often during my playing years. But enough about me – what’s your pre-game ritual these days?

Lauren Betts: That sounds awesome! For me, pre-game is all about getting in the zone. I listen to my hype playlist – it’s a mix of everything from Drake to Beyoncé. Then, I do a bit of mindfulness practice to stay focused. What about you? Any pre-retirement rituals you miss?

Sue Bird: Oh, definitely the team huddles and that electric energy in the locker room. There’s just something about those moments before stepping on the court. But it sounds like you’ve got a solid routine going. How do you handle the pressure of balancing academics and athletics?

Lauren Betts: It’s definitely a juggling act, but I’ve got a great support system. Coaches who understand the importance of academics, and teammates who are in the same boat – we help keep each other motivated. Time management is key. Do you have any advice for someone in my shoes?

Sue Bird: You’re already on the right track, but I’d say – never hesitate to ask for help when you need it. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, but leaning on your support system is crucial. And, enjoy the journey. These years fly by! Who’s your biggest inspiration on and off the court?

Lauren Betts: That’s great advice, Sue. Thank you. Besides you, of course, on the court it’s definitely Breanna Stewart – her game is just phenomenal. Off the court, it’s my family. They’ve always been there for me and have shaped who I am today. Who inspired you during your playing days?

Sue Bird: Breanna is a beast, for sure. For me, it was always about veterans like Diana Taurasi and even those from other sports who showed incredible dedication and passion. Your family sounds awesome. Keep that close – it’s your foundation. So, what’s your ultimate career goal?

Lauren Betts: My dream is to play in the WNBA and win a championship. I also want to inspire young players, especially girls, to chase their dreams and never doubt their potential. What about you, now that you’ve achieved so much – what’s next on your bucket list?

Sue Bird: Those are fantastic goals, Lauren. For me, it’s all about continuing to grow the game and giving back. I’m excited about working with youth basketball programs and maybe even some front-office roles in the future. Who knows? The sky’s the limit!

Lauren Betts: That’s incredible, Sue. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat. Your words mean a lot, and they’ll stick with me as I push forward. Hopefully, we’ll see each other on the sidelines someday!

Sue Bird: Absolutely, Lauren. Keep up the great work and never lose that spark. The future of basketball is in great hands with players like you. See you on the court – or maybe in the boardroom!
