Lauren Holiday Talks Leadership and Passion with Becky Sauerbrunn
Lauren Holiday: Hey Becky! It’s been a while since we caught up. How have you been?
Becky Sauerbrunn: Hi Lauren! I’m doing great, thanks. So much has been happening in the world of soccer, you know how it is. How about you? How’s the post-soccer life treating you?
Lauren Holiday: It’s been fantastic, actually. Being more present with my family has been such a blessing. And of course, I’ve been working on community projects, which is super fulfilling. How are things with the national team?
Becky Sauerbrunn: It’s intense but amazing. The camaraderie among the players is just inspiring. Speaking of which, I’ve always admired your leadership on and off the field. Do you miss those captain moments?
Lauren Holiday: Oh, absolutely! Leading such a talented group of women was an honor. But honestly, it’s the daily interactions and small victories I miss the most. You get that sense of belonging which is irreplaceable. What about you, Becky? You’ve been a phenomenal leader too. How do you manage to keep everyone motivated?
Becky Sauerbrunn: Thanks, Lauren! I think it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels they can be themselves and contribute. It’s a team effort, literally. We lift each other up, just like you did back in the day. What’s been your biggest challenge since retiring?
Lauren Holiday: Finding balance, for sure. I’ve got this relentless drive from my sports career that I’ve had to channel into other areas, like family and philanthropy. It’s a different kind of hustle but oh so rewarding. Speaking of drive, you’ve got some ambitious goals yourself. What’s next on your list?
Becky Sauerbrunn: Continuing to fight for equality in sports is high up there. Making sure we leave the game in a better place for the next generation is so important to me. And of course, still aiming for that World Cup gold! What advice would you give young players looking up to you?
Lauren Holiday: I’d tell them to find their passion and pour everything into it—not just in sports but in whatever they do. And to never underestimate the power of teamwork and support. Lean on each other and build each other up. What about you? Any nuggets of wisdom from the current captain of the USWNT?
Becky Sauerbrunn: I’d say stay curious and keep learning. Whether it’s about the game, your teammates, or life in general, there’s always room to grow. And enjoy the journey, every single step. It’s what shapes you into who you’re meant to be.
Lauren Holiday: Well said, Becky. Here’s to continuing that journey both on and off the field. And to friendship, of course!
Becky Sauerbrunn: Cheers to that, Lauren! Always a pleasure chatting with you.
