Lauri Markkanen Chats with Dirk Nowitzki: A Tale of Two Big Men
Lauri Markkanen: Hey Dirk, it’s fantastic to finally catch up with you. Growing up, you were one of my idols on the court. So, how’s retired life treating you?
Dirk Nowitzki: Hey Lauri, thanks, that means a lot! Retired life is pretty good, can’t complain. I get to spend more time with my family and hey, no more grueling practices! But I do miss the game. How about you? You’ve been on fire lately!
Lauri Markkanen: Thanks, man! Yeah, it’s been quite a ride with the Jazz. I’m just focusing on getting better every day, both mentally and physically. By the way, do you ever get that itch to come back?
Dirk Nowitzki: Haha, all the time! Especially when I watch games and see you young guys dominating. It’s easier when you’re out there playing, but watching from the sidelines, it’s a different kind of challenge. Any particular part of my game you’ve found yourself incorporating into yours?
Lauri Markkanen: Definitely the fadeaway! Your one-legged fadeaway is legendary. It’s like a piece of art. I’ve been working on that, trying to add more versatility to my scoring. Seeing how effective you were with it really inspired me.
Dirk Nowitzki: That’s awesome to hear! The fadeaway took years to perfect, but it was worth it. And you’ve got your own unique skill set. Keep mixing it up, and you’ll be unstoppable. Any tips for dealing with big moments? You’ve had some clutch performances lately.
Lauri Markkanen: Thanks, Dirk. I think it’s about staying calm and composed. I try to focus on the moment and not get overwhelmed by the magnitude. Speaking of which, how did you manage those high-pressure Finals games against Miami? You were ice cold.
Dirk Nowitzki: It’s all about preparation and mental focus. I reminded myself of all the hard work put in leading up to those moments. Confidence in your own preparation goes a long way. You’re showing that same mindset out there. Keep it up!
Lauri Markkanen: Really appreciate the insight, Dirk. By the way, what’s one thing you miss the most about playing?
Dirk Nowitzki: Honestly, it’s the camaraderie with the guys. Those locker room moments, the travel stories, and just being in the trenches together. That’s irreplaceable. Enjoy every moment of it, Lauri.
Lauri Markkanen: Will do! Thanks, Dirk. This conversation has been incredible. It’s an honor to learn from one of the best.
Dirk Nowitzki: Any time, Lauri. Keep making us big men proud!
