Courtside Chat: Maddy Siegrist and Sue Bird Exchange Perspectives

Maddy Siegrist: Hey Sue! It’s such an honor to chat with you. Growing up, you were seriously one of my biggest inspirations on and off the court.

Sue Bird: Thanks, Maddy! That means a lot coming from someone who’s making such waves in the game right now. How’s everything going for you?

Maddy Siegrist: Pretty great, actually! Just trying to make the most out of every opportunity and keep improving. Speaking of which, you’ve had such a long and illustrious career. How did you maintain your drive and passion through all those years?

Sue Bird: That’s a good question. I think it’s two things: loving the game and always seeing room for growth. Even now, I still watch film and notice things I can work on. What about you? What’s fueling your fire these days?

Maddy Siegrist: Honestly, it’s the love of the game too. And, of course, the amazing support from my teammates and fans. But I’m also super driven by the idea of pushing the envelope for women’s basketball—like showing the younger girls what’s possible.

Sue Bird: That’s awesome. Representation is so crucial, and you’re already inspiring a lot of young athletes out there. What are some of the goals you’ve set for yourself?

Maddy Siegrist: Short-term, just focusing on improving specific aspects of my game—could always work on my handles, you know? Long-term, I want to play at the highest level and maybe even get into coaching or mentoring younger players down the line. How about you? Any goals left on your bucket list?

Sue Bird: Oh, there’s always something! Right now, I’m exploring ways to stay involved in the game from different angles—broadcasting, coaching, possibly even GM work. And of course, pushing for more visibility and equality in women’s sports. Your plans sound fantastic, by the way. Ever thought about how you’d handle being a coach?

Maddy Siegrist: Honestly, it’s crossed my mind a lot. I think I’d love it but also be tough because I’d want to push players to be the best they can be. But first, I’ve got plenty left to learn myself. Speaking of which, any advice you’d give to an “up-and-comer” like me?

Sue Bird: Keep that hunger alive. Never stop learning from everyone around you, and remember, it’s not just about your success—it’s about lifting your entire team. And stay true to who you are, both on and off the court.

Maddy Siegrist: Thanks, Sue! That advice is gold, seriously. Can’t wait to see where this journey takes both of us—on and off the court.
