Maika Hamano Discusses Music and Creativity with Yoko Kanno

Maika Hamano: Yoko, it’s such a pleasure to sit down and chat with you! Your work in anime music has been such an inspiration to so many of us. How do you keep your creative juices flowing? There’s always something fresh and innovative in your compositions.

Yoko Kanno: Maika, thank you! That’s quite a compliment coming from a talented artist like you. For me, staying creative is all about drawing inspiration from every little thing around me — the sound of the city, snippets of conversation, and even the odd rhythms of nature. How about you? Your Piano Concerto in Blue has such an emotional depth to it. Where did that inspiration come from?

Maika Hamano: Oh, that piece was very personal to me. I spent a lot of time traveling through Europe, absorbing the various musical influences from each country. The blue part is a nod to the deep emotions that color our lives — melancholy, nostalgia, but also hope. Do you also find travel to be a big part of your creative process?

Yoko Kanno: Absolutely! Travel is a huge source of inspiration for me. Every place has its own unique sound and atmosphere. I love how you blended those regional influences in your work. Have you ever thought about incorporating more elements from traditional Japanese music into your compositions?

Maika Hamano: Funny you should mention that! I’m currently working on a project that fuses traditional Japanese instruments like the koto and shamisen with modern orchestral arrangements. It’s a challenging but exciting endeavor. What about you? Do you ever feel the urge to return to your roots in your compositions?

Yoko Kanno: Oh, all the time! There’s so much depth in traditional Japanese music. It’s almost as if it’s embedded in my musical DNA. Sometimes, it’s not even a conscious decision; those traditional elements just naturally flow into my work. By the way, your piano skills are phenomenal. What are some of your favorite pieces to play when you’re just unwinding?

Maika Hamano: Thank you, Yoko! Honestly, I love playing Chopin when I need to relax. His nocturnes have this beautiful, dreamlike quality that’s just so soothing. What about you? Any go-to pieces when you’re unwinding?

Yoko Kanno: Ah, Chopin is a great choice! For me, it’s often a mix. Sometimes I’ll go for Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” or even play around with some jazz standards. Though, I must admit, sometimes I’ll just experiment with sounds and see where it takes me. Keeps things fun and spontaneous!

Maika Hamano: That sounds delightful! It’s amazing how music can be both structured and freeing at the same time. Here’s to more spontaneous creations and continued inspiration!

Yoko Kanno: Cheers to that, Maika! Let’s keep pushing those creative boundaries.
