An Engaging Poolside Chat with Max McHugh and Ariarne Titmus
Max McHugh: Hey Ariarne, fancy seeing you here! I thought you’d be off celebrating that amazing performance in Tokyo. How’s everything been?
Ariarne Titmus: Max! It’s so good to see you. Yeah, Tokyo was a whirlwind, but it feels great to be back to some normalcy. How about you? Dominating those breaststroke events as usual?
Max McHugh: Ha, trying my best! But it’s always a grind, you know that. Speaking of which, congrats on out-touching Ledecky. That was a legendary race! What was going through your mind?
Ariarne Titmus: Oh, thank you! Honestly, it was a mix of excitement and relief. I kept telling myself to stay calm and stick to my strategy. How about your races, Max? You’ve been setting records left and right.
Max McHugh: Thanks, Ariarne. Yeah, been trying to keep the momentum going. The goal is always to shave off those milliseconds. Speaking of strategy, how do you balance the mental and physical aspects of training?
Ariarne Titmus: Great question. For me, it’s all about visualization and positive self-talk. I try to picture every stroke and turn in my head beforehand. Physically, it’s about finding the right mix of hard work and recovery. What about you?
Max McHugh: Visualization, definitely. And a lot of underwater work. Breaststroke is all about that explosive power off the walls. What does a typical training day look like for you?
Ariarne Titmus: Oh, it’s pretty structured. Morning swim session, a bit of gym work, then another swim session in the evening. And loads of recovery in between. Do you mix it up or stick to a rigid plan?
Max McHugh: I like to mix it up to keep things interesting. Some days it’s heavy on the sprints, other days it’s technique work. Keeps the body guessing and mind engaged. Do you have any pre-race rituals?
Ariarne Titmus: Definitely! I listen to my favorite pump-up playlist and have a banana about 30 minutes before. Weird, but it works for me. What about you?
Max McHugh: I keep it simple. Some stretches, a quick pep talk with the coach, and I always wear my lucky cap. Can’t race without it! By the way, how do you stay balanced outside of swimming?
Ariarne Titmus: Family and friends are key. They keep me grounded and remind me there’s more to life than just swimming. And, of course, a good TV show binge here and there! How do you unwind?
Max McHugh: Same here, family and friends. Plus, I’m a bit of a video game nerd. It’s a great way to switch off after a long day. Any favorite shows you’re watching right now?
Ariarne Titmus: Just finished “Stranger Things!” Can’t wait for the next season. Any recommendations?
Max McHugh: Nice choice! You should check out “The Witcher” if you haven’t already. It’s epic. Anyway, we should catch up more often. Maybe even a friendly race?
Ariarne Titmus: Absolutely, Max! Let’s make it happen. Always great chatting with you. Catch you at the pool!
Max McHugh: Sounds like a plan! Take care, Ariarne.
