An Engaging Chat: Maya DiRado and Katie Ledecky on Life Beyond the Pool
Maya DiRado: Katie! It’s been a while since we last caught up. How have you been?
Katie Ledecky: Hey, Maya! I’ve been good, just busy with training and some new projects. How about you? You’ve transitioned so gracefully from swimming to your career!
Maya DiRado: Thanks, Katie! It’s been an interesting journey. I’ve been working in the business world and it’s definitely a different pace compared to swimming. But, enough about me—what new projects are you working on?
Katie Ledecky: Well, I’m focusing on the next Olympics, of course, but I’m also excited about promoting swimming and water safety through some organizations I’m partnering with. It’s really rewarding.
Maya DiRado: That sounds amazing! I miss the water sometimes, but I love the new challenges I’ve found. Speaking of which, readers might not know this, but we both share a love for reading. Got any book recommendations?
Katie Ledecky: Oh, absolutely! I just finished “Educated” by Tara Westover. It’s such a powerful read. What about you?
Maya DiRado: “Educated” is fantastic! I’m currently reading “Grit” by Angela Duckworth. It really resonates with the determination we had in our swimming careers.
Katie Ledecky: I’ll have to check that out. Speaking of grit, I remember those early morning practices. Any chance you miss them?
Maya DiRado: Haha, I miss the team and the sense of accomplishment but not the cold water at 5 am! Now, I channel that energy into my work. How about you? Still loving the grind?
Katie Ledecky: Definitely. There’s something about pushing yourself to the limit that’s addictive. Plus, seeing the younger swimmers develop is inspiring.
Maya DiRado: I know what you mean. It’s all about the journey and the people you meet along the way. Speaking of which, any travel plans?
Katie Ledecky: Hopefully soon! I’ve got my eyes set on a few places. How are you enjoying life in the business world? What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced?
Maya DiRado: The corporate world is a different beast altogether, but my experience in swimming really prepared me for it. The biggest challenge is definitely finding a balance, but I guess that’s true for everyone, right?
Katie Ledecky: Absolutely. It’s all about finding that balance and making time for what matters most. Speaking of which, any tips for our readers on how to stay motivated and balanced?
Maya DiRado: Surround yourself with supportive people and never be afraid to ask for help. And always make time for things that make you happy, whether that’s reading, running, or just having a coffee with a friend.
Katie Ledecky: Couldn’t agree more. It’s the small things that keep us going. This was fun, Maya! We should do this more often.
Maya DiRado: Absolutely, Katie. Always a pleasure chatting with you. Until next time!
