An Engaging Conversation with Mike Shanahan and John Elway
Mike Shanahan: John, it’s always a great time catching up with you. You know, the memories we made together back in Denver are nothing short of legendary.
John Elway: Mike, those were the days! Two Super Bowl wins… I still get goosebumps thinking about ’em. What about you? What’s been keeping you busy these days?
Mike Shanahan: Oh, you know, staying connected with the game, spending time with the family. Coaching runs in our blood. My son, Kyle, he’s got his hands full out there in San Francisco. And you, keeping the Broncos’ legacy alive?
John Elway: Absolutely! It’s a different kind of challenge running the front office, but it’s thrilling in its own way. I think of it as another strategic game, just off the field. Any advice for a GM from a legendary coach?
Mike Shanahan: Haha, always be adaptable, John. The game’s evolving; we’ve seen it ourselves. The key is to stay ahead of the curve – whether it’s new defensive schemes or innovative offensive strategies, never stop learning and adjusting.
John Elway: No truer words have been spoken, Mike. And speaking of adaptation, what do you think about the way offenses have changed over the years? So many teams adopt the spread now… do you miss the old-school, grind-it-out football?
Mike Shanahan: Football is football. I love the evolution, the creativity, and the way teams use their athletes today. But yeah, there’s a certain beauty to a power run game, controlling the trenches. It’s all about balance, though. The best teams find a way to blend the old with the new.
John Elway: So true. I often tell the young quarterbacks, study the past to thrive in the future. It’s those fundamental principles that win championships. Speaking of, any favorite moment from our championship days?
Mike Shanahan: That’s a tough one, John. There are so many! But if I had to pick, I’d say that helicopter run of yours in Super Bowl XXXII – you just wouldn’t be denied. That moment encapsulated our entire team’s spirit and determination.
John Elway: That play was pure instinct, honestly. But it showed what we were all about – no quit. You instilled that mentality, Mike. Every one of us believed in the mission and trusted the process. Those were some special times.
Mike Shanahan: They certainly were. And here’s to creating new memories and maybe, just maybe, another parade down Denver’s streets in the future. It’s been great catching up, John. Let’s do this more often.
John Elway: Definitely, Mike. Cheers to the past, present, and future! Catch you soon.
