A Chat with Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Katie Ledecky: Diving into Life In and Out of the Pool
Ranomi Kromowidjojo: Hey Katie! It’s so awesome we finally got a moment to sit down and chat. Between the crazy schedules and all the training, we’ve hardly had a chance to catch up!
Katie Ledecky: I know, right? It’s been like a whirlwind every year. It’s amazing how swimming can bring us to all corners of the world but, at the same time, keeps us kind of insulated from hanging out with teammates from other countries.
Ranomi: Absolutely. So, Katie, tell me, what’s your secret to keeping that killer distance pace? I mean, I’m all about those short, explosive sprints, but 1500 meters is a whole different beast!
Katie: (laughs) It’s a lot of mind over matter. Plus, years of finding the perfect balance in training. But honestly, I am super impressed with your sprints, Ranomi. It’s like watching a cheetah in the water—pure power and speed! How do you stay so sharp for those quick bursts?
Ranomi: Oh, thank you! It’s a combination of explosive dryland workouts, quick-twitch muscle training, and, of course, a ton of focus. But what really gets me pumped is the adrenaline rush just before the race. It’s addictive!
Katie: Oh, I totally get that—the energy at the blocks is just electrifying! Speaking of adrenaline, what do you usually do to unwind after a major competition?
Ranomi:: I’m a huge fan of unwinding with good food and great company. There’s nothing like a nice Dutch meal and catching up with friends and family. How about you? Any post-meet rituals?
Katie:: Pretty similar! I love a good meal too. Sometimes I’ll treat myself to the biggest cheeseburger I can find (laughs). And definitely catching up on all the Netflix series I missed during heavy training phases.
Ranomi:: Ah, I can see us hanging out and having a great time with that combination! Speaking of fun, I heard you’ve started dabbling in some open-water swims. How’s that transition been?
Katie:: It’s been interesting, to say the least! It’s a whole new challenge compared to the pool. Battling the elements while swimming adds a tough, yet refreshing dimension. Have you ever considered trying it?
Ranomi:: I have to admit, the idea intrigues me. Maybe one day I’ll give it a shot, although I’m pretty attached to the clean lines of the pool (laughs).
Katie:: We should definitely do an open water event together sometime—just for fun! Imagine the looks on people’s faces when they see the two of us out there.
