Inside the Ring: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez Chats with Boxing Legend Oscar De La Hoya
Oscar De La Hoya: Hola, champ! Great to see you taking a breather between your intense training sessions. How’s everything going?
Saul Alvarez: Hola, Oscar! You know how it is, always grinding, always preparing for the next big fight. Training’s been tough but that’s how we like it, right?
Oscar De La Hoya: Absolutely. No pain, no gain. Speaking of tough, I’ve seen you tackle some fierce competitors in the ring. Who’s been your toughest opponent so far?
Saul Alvarez: There have been quite a few, but if I had to pick one, it would be Gennady Golovkin. Those fights were wars, man. GGG is a powerhouse, and it took everything I had to come out on top.
Oscar De La Hoya: GGG is no joke. You really showed the world your skill and heart in those matches. Now, with all the success you’ve had, what motivates you to keep going?
Saul Alvarez: Honestly, it’s all about legacy. I want to be remembered as one of the greatest ever. Plus, I have a responsibility to my family, my fans, and to myself to keep pushing the limits. And of course, there’s always the next hungry challenger looking to take my spot.
Oscar De La Hoya: Spoken like a true champion. Speaking of legacy, you’re already a legend in your own right. Any thoughts on how you want to contribute to the sport after you hang up the gloves?
Saul Alvarez: I’ve been thinking a lot about that. I want to give back to the sport that gave me everything. Maybe I’ll take up training the next generation of fighters, or even promote fights to help other boxers get their big break. I want to ensure the sport’s future is bright.
Oscar De La Hoya: That’s fantastic to hear. With your experience and wisdom, you’d make a phenomenal mentor. Lastly, what advice would you give to young fighters who look up to you?
Saul Alvarez: Stay dedicated, stay humble, and never stop learning. Talent will only get you so far, but hard work and perseverance are what truly make a champion. And remember, enjoy the journey. Every step, every fight, every victory and even the losses—it’s all part of your story.
Oscar De La Hoya: Words of wisdom from the best in the business. Thanks for sharing, Canelo. Can’t wait to see what’s next for you!
Saul Alvarez: Thank you, Oscar! It’s always a pleasure. Let’s keep making history!
