An Imaginary Conversation with Te-Hina Paopao and Sue Bird
Te-Hina Paopao: Hey Sue, I’m so thrilled to have this chat with you! Growing up, you were one of my biggest inspirations on the court. How’s it going?
Sue Bird: Thanks, Te-Hina! It’s great to be here with you. I’m doing well, enjoying retirement and all the new adventures it brings. I’ve been keeping an eye on your games, by the way. You’re killing it!
Te-Hina Paopao: That means a lot coming from you. I’m just trying to take my game to the next level every day. What do you miss the most about your playing days?
Sue Bird: Oh, that’s a tough one. I think I miss the camaraderie with my teammates the most. There’s nothing quite like the bond you form when you’re training, traveling, and playing together. How about you? What’s been your favorite part of playing at Oregon?
Te-Hina Paopao: Definitely the team bond. We push each other to improve and have each other’s backs on and off the court. It’s like a family. Plus, the Ducks fans are something else. Their energy always pumps me up.
Sue Bird: That’s awesome to hear. Speaking of pushing each other, I’ve watched your leadership grow over the seasons. You’ve become such a playmaker. How do you approach leadership on the court?
Te-Hina Paopao: I try to lead by example and stay vocal. Communication is key, right? I make sure everyone’s on the same page, especially during high-pressure moments. How did you handle it when you had to step into a leadership role?
Sue Bird: Absolutely, communication is crucial. For me, it was about understanding my teammates and what made them tick. Everyone responds differently to pressure, so finding the right way to connect and motivate each person was essential. You seem to have a natural knack for it.
Te-Hina Paopao: I appreciate that! Still learning each day. Switching gears a bit, what advice would you give to young players who look up to us?
Sue Bird: I’d tell them to never lose their love for the game. The journey is long and can be tough, but if you’re passionate and committed, it’s all worth it. Also, always stay curious and ready to learn. You can learn something new from every experience, good or bad. What about you?
Te-Hina Paopao: That’s so true. I’d say, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. They’re your best teachers. And surround yourself with people who believe in you and push you to be your best. Basketball, or any sport, isn’t just about personal success but growing together as a team.
Sue Bird: Couldn’t agree more. It’s such a beautiful journey when you have the right people on your side. Keep shining, Te-Hina. The future of women’s basketball is in great hands with players like you leading the way.
Te-Hina Paopao: Thanks, Sue. Coming from you, that really means a lot. I’ll continue to work hard and make you proud!
