A Conversation with Vebjørn Rodal and Karsten Warholm: The Pursuit of Excellence on the Track

Vebjørn Rodal: Hey Karsten, great to finally catch up! I’ve been following your career closely. Your 400m hurdles run is nothing short of phenomenal. How do you manage to keep pushing the boundaries?

Karsten Warholm: Thanks, Vebjørn! Coming from an Olympic gold medalist, that means a lot. For me, it’s all about mental fortitude and never being satisfied. What about you? Your 800m gold in Atlanta ’96 was a masterclass. What was your secret back then?

Vebjørn Rodal: Ah, the good old days! For me, it was all about precision and mental calmness. The 800m is a mix of speed and strategy. Training was crucial, but staying composed during the race really made the difference. I see similar traits in your approach, too.

Karsten Warholm: Absolutely. The mental aspect can’t be underestimated. Let’s talk training regimes. How did your sessions look compared to what today’s athletes are doing?

Vebjørn Rodal: Training has definitely evolved! Back then, it was a mix of anaerobic and aerobic sessions, with a huge emphasis on interval training. Though, it’s fascinating to see how science and technology have changed the game now. How’s your training different?

Karsten Warholm: It’s all data-driven now! We use a lot of tech to monitor every aspect of performance, from biomechanics to recovery. But some things never change, like the grind and dedication. Do you think you’d have done anything differently with today’s technology?

Vebjørn Rodal: I think it could have helped in fine-tuning my strategy and avoiding injuries, but the core principles remain the same. Discipline, passion, and a bit of madness! Speaking of madness, what keeps you motivated to break your own records?

Karsten Warholm: It’s the thrill of the chase, Vebjørn. The idea that every time you race, you have a shot at doing something historic. Plus, I love the competition. What was your driving force back in your racing days?

Vebjørn Rodal: Similar reasons, to be honest. The pursuit of excellence and the euphoria of crossing the finish line first. And of course, making my country proud. It’s a feeling that never gets old. Any big goals on the horizon for you?

Karsten Warholm: Always. World records, Olympic titles, you name it. But more than anything, I want to inspire the next generation, much like how you inspired us. Any advice for up-and-coming athletes?

Vebjørn Rodal: Always stay curious and never stop learning. Embrace every challenge, and most importantly, enjoy the journey. It’s been great chatting with you, Karsten. Keep making history!

Karsten Warholm: Thanks, Vebjørn! Let’s do this again soon. Maybe even a joint training session? Could be fun!

Vebjørn Rodal: Absolutely, I’m in! Until then, keep running towards greatness!
