A Swim Down Memory Lane with Ye Shiwen and Michael Phelps
Michael Phelps: Hey Shiwen! It’s been a while since we both have had a break from the pool. How are you doing?
Ye Shiwen: Hi Michael! I’m doing well, thanks. Busy with training as usual, but it’s great to catch up with you. How’s retirement treating you?
Michael Phelps: Retirement is great, although I do miss the adrenaline rush of competition. Speaking of competition, your performance in the 2012 Olympics was unforgettable. What was going through your mind during that race?
Ye Shiwen: Oh, the 2012 Olympics! That was such a whirlwind experience. During the race, I just focused on my own lane and tried to keep my calm. The excitement of hearing the crowd and knowing it’s the biggest stage in the world kept me going strong.
Michael Phelps: It definitely showed! I remember watching you swim and thinking, wow, she’s not just competing, she’s owning that pool. How has your training evolved since then?
Ye Shiwen: Thanks, Michael! Over the years, both my techniques and mindset have evolved. I’m more mindful of my body’s needs and recovery now. Incorporating yoga and meditation has really helped my mental strength. How about you, have you picked up any new hobbies since hanging up your goggles?
Michael Phelps: Absolutely. I’ve been focusing on my mental health advocacy and spending a ton of time with my family. I even picked up golf! It’s a different kind of challenge but just as fulfilling.
Ye Shiwen: That sounds amazing! I’ve always admired how you’ve used your platform to promote mental health. It’s important for athletes and everyone else too! So, any tips for staying motivated?
Michael Phelps: Staying motivated can be tough, but it’s all about setting new goals. Whether they are big or small, having something to work towards keeps the fire burning. Finding what you’re passionate about also makes a huge difference. For me, that’s giving back and spending quality time with loved ones.
Ye Shiwen: Great advice, Michael. Setting new milestones and embracing passions definitely keep life exciting. Here’s to continuing to make waves, both in and out of the pool!
Michael Phelps: Cheers to that, Shiwen!
