Inside the Ring: A Chat Between Riddick Bowe and Mike Tyson

Riddick Bowe: Hey Mike, it’s great to catch up with you, man. You’ve been keeping busy with all your ventures outside of boxing. How’s life treating you?

Mike Tyson: Bowe! Man, life’s been a whirlwind, but you know how it goes. Gotta reinvent yourself after the ring. Between the podcast, the cannabis business, and just living life, I can’t complain. How about you? Staying out of trouble?

Riddick Bowe: (laughs) Trying to, brother, trying to. You know, it’s wild to think back on our careers. The heavyweight division was stacked back in our day. I remember some crazy fights, man. Hell, feels like yesterday I was knocking out Holyfield!

Mike Tyson: Oh, for sure. Your trilogy with Holyfield was something else. That first fight, especially—what a war! Do you ever miss it? The adrenaline, the crowd, the smell of the gloves?

Riddick Bowe: Man, every day. There’s nothing like it. It’s in the blood. But life outside the ring has its own surprises. I’ve been mentoring some young fighters. Helping them navigate the business side of the sport, you know? A lot of sharks out there.

Mike Tyson: Absolutely. The business side is a beast, sometimes tougher than anything we faced in the ring. That’s awesome, though, mentoring the next gen. You think any of them got what it takes to be the next Bowe or Tyson?

Riddick Bowe: There’s some raw talent, for sure. But it takes more than just skill. It’s the heart, the determination, the willingness to dig deep when you’re backed into a corner. I tell them all the time, it’s 90% mental.

Mike Tyson: Ain’t that the truth. Mental toughness, man, that’s what sets the greats apart. Speaking of, we gotta talk about your jab. One of the best in the game! What’s your secret?

Riddick Bowe: (grinning) Balance, Mike. It’s all in the balance and timing. And, of course, a lot of hard work. I used to practice it for hours, perfecting my stance, my reach. You had that uppercut, a one-punch demolisher. What was your magic?

Mike Tyson: Pure rage, man. A lot of anger and years of discipline. Cus D’Amato drilled it into me every day. It was about precision, speed, and that killer instinct. But hey, now we’re all about peace and wisdom, right? (laughs)

Riddick Bowe: (laughs) Exactly! We’ve come a long way. It’s all about passing down what we’ve learned now. Speaking of which, what’s one piece of advice you’d give to up-and-coming fighters?

Mike Tyson: Focus on your mental game as much as your physical. Stay humble, stay hungry, and never forget where you came from. And always, always protect yourself at all times.

Riddick Bowe: Amen to that. Protect yourself in more ways than one. Great catching up, Mike. Let’s do this more often.

Mike Tyson: Definitely, Bowe. Stay strong, champ!
