An Engaging Chat with Les Miles and Nick Saban
Les Miles: Nick, it’s been way too long since we last caught up. How’s life over in Tuscaloosa treating you these days? Heard Alabama’s rolling as always.
Nick Saban: Hey Les, it definitely has been a while. Things are good, you know how it goes. Non-stop grind, keeping the Crimson Tide on top. But I have to ask – how’s the transition from the sideline to the set treating you?
Les Miles: Oh, it’s been a wild ride, Nick. You know me, always up for a challenge. Broadcasting’s been a lot of fun and different, but I miss the intensity of game day. Sometimes I wonder how you manage to stay so… stoic all the time.
Nick Saban: Stoic, huh? Maybe it’s just that poker face I perfected over the years. Seriously though, the game’s in our blood, Les. Whether you’re on the field or off it, you can never really let go. It’s in the adrenaline of calling plays or, in your case now, calling games.
Les Miles: Ain’t that the truth. Speaking of calling plays, remember that trick play we pulled off back in ’07? Good times, right? You ever think about pulling a gadget play every now and then, just for old times’ sake?
Nick Saban: (Chuckles) Yeah, I remember. You always had a knack for the unexpected. We have our moments, but you know my style. Discipline, fundamentals, and executing the basics. Sometimes that’s trickier than the trick plays themselves.
Les Miles: Can’t argue with that. Basics win championships. By the way, have you ever thought about writing a book? “The Saban Secrets” or something like that. You know folks would line up for that insight.
Nick Saban: (Laughs) Maybe someday, Les. After I’ve hung up the headset for good. Until then, I’ve got my hands full with this current crop of players. But hey, maybe I’ll call you up for some storytelling pointers when the time comes.
Les Miles: Anytime, old friend. I’m just a phone call away. Just make sure to add a chapter about how to take the grass if things ever get too stressful. (Winks)
Nick Saban: (Grinning) Noted. Always good chatting with you, Les. We should do it more often.
Les Miles: Definitely. Stay sharp, Nick. And maybe, just maybe, consider surprising ‘em with a gadget play once in a while. For old times’ sake.
Nick Saban: I’ll keep that in mind, Les. Take care.
Les Miles: You too, Nick. Catch you later.
