An Engaging Conversation: Glen Mason Talks Shop with Urban Meyer
Glen Mason: Urban, it’s great to catch up with you. The world of college football always seems a bit more exhilarating after swapping stories with another seasoned coach. How’s life treating you after stepping back from the sidelines?
Urban Meyer: Glen, it’s a pleasure as always. Life’s been interesting, to say the least. Broadcasting has given me a new perspective on the game without the stress of coaching. But I’ll admit, nothing beats the adrenaline rush from the sidelines. How about you? What’s been keeping you busy these days?
Glen Mason: Oh, you know me—staying involved with football in any way I can. Between commentary gigs and helping out behind the scenes, it’s still all about the game. I do miss calling the shots sometimes, though. Speaking of which, do you ever catch yourself almost yelling at the TV during big games?
Urban Meyer: (Laughs) More times than I care to admit! The muscle memory of coaching is hard to shake off. You see a play unfold, and you just know what needs to happen next. But, then again, there’s a joy in watching and analyzing the game without the immediate pressure of making those calls. Do you think the game has changed much since our coaching days?
Glen Mason: Absolutely. The pace is quicker, the strategies are evolving faster, and the players—wow, they’re more versatile than ever. It’s fascinating to keep up. But the core fundamentals, they remain the same. What I find intriguing is how technology and analytics have started to play a bigger role. What are your thoughts on that shift?
Urban Meyer: It’s a double-edged sword, really. Analytics provide valuable insights, but sometimes I worry they’re taking away from the instinctual, gut-feeling decisions that define the sport. You can’t always quantify heart and determination, you know? Have you seen any trends in the game recently that surprise you?
Glen Mason: The flexibility of positions is one. Seeing quarterbacks who can run like wide receivers and linemen who move like they’re half their size—it’s a whole new ball game. The physicality coupled with agility is astounding. But let’s switch gears a bit; if you were stepping back into coaching today, what would be your first priority?
Urban Meyer: Building a strong culture, without a doubt. Talent is crucial, but a team’s culture is its backbone. Players need to believe in each other and in the system. It’s like, if you’ve got the right mindset and camaraderie, you can overcome almost anything. What about you, Glen? What’s the one piece of wisdom you’d impart to a new coach?
Glen Mason: Adaptability. You have to be ready to evolve with the game and your team. Staying rigid in your ways can be detrimental. Being open to new ideas while holding onto core principles, that’s the balancing act. And never underestimate the power of mentorship—each player is different, and discovering how to unlock their potential is half the fun.
Urban Meyer: Couldn’t agree more. It’s been great chatting, Glen. Here’s to hoping our paths cross at a big game soon.
Glen Mason: Definitely, Urban. Thanks for the great conversation. Until next time, stay sharp!
