An Exclusive Conversation with Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Pep Guardiola
Giovanni van Bronckhorst: Hey Pep, it’s been a while! How have you been?
Pep Guardiola: Giovanni! It’s great to see you. I’ve been well, busy as always, you know how it is in this world. How about you? How’s life treating you on the managerial side?
Giovanni van Bronckhorst: It’s been a rollercoaster! Managing is a whole different beast compared to playing, but the adrenaline rush is something I wouldn’t trade for anything. You’re a seasoned pro now, Pep. What’s your secret to keeping the fire alive?
Pep Guardiola: (Laughs) Honestly, it’s the passion. Every match, every training session still excites me like it’s my first day. Plus, seeing young talent grow and develop under your guidance is incredibly fulfilling. You’ve been in the hot seat yourself. What’s been your biggest challenge?
Giovanni van Bronckhorst: Transitioning from player to coach wasn’t easy. As a player, you focus on your role, your game. But as a coach, it’s about the whole team, the strategy, managing personalities. And of course, keeping up with the ever-evolving tactics in modern football. You’ve set the bar high with your innovative approaches!
Pep Guardiola: True, the game evolves rapidly. But you’ve made quite a name for yourself too, especially with Feyenoord. Winning the Eredivisie was no small feat. What was the key to that success?
Giovanni van Bronckhorst: It was a combination of things—strong team spirit, the right tactics, and of course, a bit of luck! But most importantly, it was about believing in our capabilities. Having a vision and getting everyone aligned with it. Kind of like what you’ve done with your teams, particularly Barcelona and Manchester City. How do you get the players to buy into your philosophy?
Pep Guardiola: Communication and trust. Players need to understand the ‘why’ behind everything we do on the pitch. And they must trust that their hard work will pay off. It’s also crucial to be adaptable. Sometimes, you have to tweak your approach based on the strengths and weaknesses of your squad. I have to ask, Giovanni, where do you draw your inspiration from?
Giovanni van Bronckhorst: A mix of experiences, really. From great coaches I’ve worked with, to the different styles I’ve encountered in my playing days across leagues and countries. And yes, I’ve borrowed a page or two from your book as well, Pep! Always looking to blend the best of various worlds to create something unique.
Pep Guardiola: That’s what it’s all about—continual learning and adaptation. I’m truly excited to see where your journey takes you next. Any plans for the future you’d like to share?
Giovanni van Bronckhorst: Well, the dream is to manage at the highest level, maybe even take a shot at coaching a national team someday. But for now, it’s about making the most of every opportunity and keeping the flame burning bright. Let’s see where this road leads!
Pep Guardiola: I’m sure it’s going to be an incredible journey. The world of football is lucky to have you, Giovanni. Here’s to many more successes and exciting matches ahead!
Giovanni van Bronckhorst: Cheers to that, Pep! And thanks for the chat. Until next time!
Pep Guardiola: Anytime, Giovanni. Take care and keep inspiring!
