Meeting of Minds: Ron Artest (Metta World Peace) and Phil Jackson Talk Life, Basketball, and the Power of Peace
Phil Jackson: Metta! Or should I call you Ron? It’s always a trip trying to keep up with you, man.
Metta World Peace: Phil, you know you can call me whatever, just as long as you don’t bring up that triangle offense too much! But seriously, it’s Metta now.
Phil Jackson: Ah, the triangle… the good old days. Speaking of which, do you ever miss the chaos of the court or are you embracing the peace more these days?
Metta World Peace: You know, it’s funny. There was chaos on the court, but that was my happy place. Off-court, every day is about embracing peace, finding calm. Even if that does sound a bit cliché coming from a guy who once stormed into the stands!
Phil Jackson: Haha, the Ron I coached, always keeping things interesting. You’ve had quite the journey—from Queensbridge to becoming an NBA champion. What was the most surreal moment in your career?
Metta World Peace: That’s like asking a parent to pick their favorite kid! Let’s see, though. Probably hitting that three in Game 7 of the 2010 Finals. Man, I felt like the universe was in perfect harmony for a second. And of course, hugging the trophy with you right there, reminding me to be in the moment.
Phil Jackson: That was unforgettable, indeed. You’ve been using your platform a lot lately to talk about mental health. How’s that transition been from athlete to advocate?
Metta World Peace: It’s humbling, to be honest. Basketball gives you a voice, but helping people with real-life issues like mental health gives you purpose. I want people to know it’s okay to not be okay and to seek help. We spread peace, one conversation at a time.
Phil Jackson: Wise words, Metta. Do you think our time together, all the meditation, and mindfulness techniques influenced your journey?
Metta World Peace: Absolutely! Zen Master, right? You taught us that it was more than just basketball; it was about exploring the mind. I might’ve seemed like I wasn’t paying attention sometimes, but trust me, those lessons stuck. They’re part of what keeps me centered today.
Phil Jackson: I’m glad to hear that. These days, the game is changing rapidly with new talents and evolving strategies. Any advice for the young guns coming up?
Metta World Peace: Love the game, respect the grind, and take care of your mental. It’s easy to get caught up in the fame and the flash, but staying true to who you are is everything. And never forget, defense wins championships, just ask my former teammates!
Phil Jackson: Spoken like a true champion. It’s great catching up with you, Metta. Keep spreading that peace and wisdom.
Metta World Peace: Always, Phil. Thanks for the memories and the lessons. See you at the next Lakers reunion!
