Sam Querrey Chats With John Isner: A Courtside Catch-Up
Sam Querrey: Hey John! Long time no see, buddy! How have you been? How’s the serve treating you these days?
John Isner: Hey Sam! Great to see you too. The serve’s still going strong, just like old times. Been working on mixing it up a bit, you know? Keep the young guys guessing.
Sam: That’s awesome, man. You’ve always had that killer serve. By the way, how was the offseason? Any cool adventures or were you just fine-tuning that booming serve?
John: I took some time off to chill with the fam, which was great. Managed to get in a bit of fishing too — you know how much I love that. How about you? Still surfing those Cali waves?
Sam: You bet! Surfing’s been my go-to. There’s nothing like hitting the waves early in the morning. So refreshing. Plus, been dabbling a bit more in golf. Trying to perfect my swing when I’m not on the court.
John: Golf, huh? You ever considered the senior tour once we’re done with tennis? Could see you out there giving Phil Mickelson a run for his money.
Sam: (Laughs) We’ll see about that! But hey, speaking of transitioning, I heard you’ve been doing some fitness training camps. How’s that been panning out?
John: It’s been fantastic. I love helping the next generation get better. There’s some real talent out there. Lots of young kids with big dreams — brings me back to when we were starting out.
Sam: That’s inspiring. Those kids are lucky to have you as a mentor. I remember when we were both newbies on the tour, just trying to make our mark. Now look at us — grizzled veterans imparting wisdom!
John: (Laughs) Speak for yourself, old man! But seriously, it does feel good to give back. I think it’s important for the sport and helps keep us grounded. Plus, it’s kinda nice being the wise sage for a change.
Sam: Absolutely. So, any upcoming tournaments you’re particularly pumped for? Or is it just a “one match at a time” kinda deal these days?
John: Well, Wimbledon’s always a highlight for me — can’t resist the grass courts. But yeah, mostly taking it one match at a time. Trying to savor every moment. What about you? Anything specific on the horizon?
Sam: Wimbledon’s definitely on my radar too. But honestly, I’ve been enjoying this phase of balancing tennis with other passions. Feels like the pressure’s off and I can really just enjoy the game.
John: That’s the way to do it. At the end of the day, it’s all about loving what we do, right? And speaking of love, your little one’s got to be keeping you on your toes!
Sam: For sure. Being a dad is a whole new ball game. But I love it. Makes everything else just fall into place. Life’s good, my friend. Real good.
John: Couldn’t agree more, Sam. Here’s to more matches, more waves, and more awesome times ahead!
Sam: Cheers to that, John! See you out there on the court.
John: You bet. And may the best server win!
