Bernard Hinault’s Chat with Eddy Merckx: A Legendary Cycling Encounter

Bernard Hinault (BH): Well, Eddy, it’s not every day two “Cannibals” get to sit down and chat! How have you been?

Eddy Merckx (EM): Bernard, my friend! I’m good, thank you. It certainly takes one to know one. I think the last time we talked at length was…what, ten years ago? Time flies!

BH: That sounds about right. You know, I still shake my head when I think about how fierce those Tour de France days were. Remember the time in ’79 when everything seemed like a sprint?

EM: How could I forget? You were unstoppable! You certainly lived up to the “Badger” nickname. But speaking of nicknames, do you find it funny how fans love them? The “Cannibal” this, the “Badger” that…

BH: Absolutely. It’s part of the charm of cycling, I think. These names make it so much more personal. But let’s talk training regimes. I’m curious, Eddy, how different do you think your training back then would compare to today’s riders?

EM: Oh, it’s a whole different ballgame now, Bernard! With all the technology and specialized diets. What about you? What would you tweak in your training if you had today’s tools?

BH: Good question! I’d love to see my data on those power meters. And nutrition…well, let’s just say I wouldn’t be having quite so many croissants, as much as I love them. But all this talk of racing brings back memories. Do you miss the thrill of the competitive circuits?

EM: Sometimes. There’s nothing like the adrenaline of a sprint finish. But I’ve found so much joy in mentoring young cyclists. It’s rewarding to pass on what we’ve learned. Speaking of which, any young rider you’ve got your eye on?

BH: Oh, there are a few. Tadej Pogačar, for one. His tactical intelligence reminds me of a certain Belgian legend I used to know. You?

EM: Pogačar is impressive, no doubt. I also think Remco Evenepoel has incredible potential. It’s fascinating to watch these talented young riders redefine the sport. Definitely makes me proud of where cycling is heading.

BH: Couldn’t agree more. It’s evolving, but the spirit remains the same. Hey, Eddy, do you ever wonder what a race would be like between us in our primes with today’s technology? Now that would be a spectacle!

EM: Ha! That’s a thought, Bernard. One thing’s for sure: neither of us would give an inch. Maybe in some alternate universe, we’re still out there, racing wheel to wheel.

BH: Cheers to that. Until then, we’ll leave it to the imagination. Here’s to the sport of kings, Eddy, and everything it gave us.

EM: Agreed, Bernard. Santé!

And with that, the two legends nodded in mutual respect, their presence a testament to the enduring legacy of cycling.
