A Shoreline Chat: Hiroto Ohhara & Kelly Slater Talk Waves & Beyond

Kelly Slater: Hey Hiroto! Great to catch you by the beach. Ever thought about how different our surfing journeys have been?

Hiroto Ohhara: Hey Kelly! Absolutely. You’re like the surfing legend from the ’90s and 2000s, while I’m just trying to make my mark in this new era. It’s inspiring to see what you’ve achieved.

Kelly Slater: Thanks, Hiroto. You’ve already carved quite the name for yourself. Remember your win at the US Open of Surfing in 2015? That was epic! What do you think was the game-changer for you back then?

Hiroto Ohhara: Oh man, that was surreal. I think it was all about believing in myself and really tuning into the waves. Also, having a great support system—my family and coach were always pushing me forward. What about you? What’s kept you going all these years?

Kelly Slater: Passion, really. And a bit of stubbornness, I guess. Surfing is one of those sports where you’re constantly learning. Even after decades, the ocean never fails to surprise you. Speaking of surprises, what’s your favorite surf spot these days?

Hiroto Ohhara: Lately, I’ve been hitting the beaches in Chiba. There are some hidden gems there that not many people know about. Plus, it’s always awesome to surf back home in Japan. What about you? Still chasing those perfect waves in Fiji?

Kelly Slater: Fiji is a dream, but I’d say I’ve been obsessed with the breaks in Costa Rica recently. There’s something magical about that place. So Hiroto, what’s next for you? Eyeing any competitions or projects?

Hiroto Ohhara: I’m preparing for a few upcoming comps, but I’m also focusing on some community projects back home. I want to inspire the next generation of Japanese surfers. Any advice for someone trying to balance surfing with giving back?

Kelly Slater: It’s all about passion and priorities. If you love what you do, you’ll find a way to do both. And involving the community can actually make you a better surfer because it keeps you grounded. Just keep riding those waves, both in the water and in life.

Hiroto Ohhara: Wise words, Kelly. Thanks, man. Here’s to catching more incredible waves and giving back to the community. Maybe we’ll even ride a few together someday!

Kelly Slater: Definitely, Hiroto. Looking forward to it!
