Surfing the Waves and Breaking Barriers: A Chat with Keala Kennelly

Keala Kennelly: Hey everyone! I’m stoked to be chatting today with my good friend and fellow wave warrior, Carissa Moore. We’ve got an epic discussion lined up, so let’s dive right in! Carissa, how are you doing?

Carissa Moore: Hey Keala, I’m doing great! Always stoked to catch up with you. So, let’s start with the big one – you absolutely killed it at the Jaws Challenge. What’s it like facing those monstrous waves?

Keala Kennelly: Aww, thanks Carissa! Jaws is such a beast, right? It’s one of those waves that really demands your full respect. It’s so humbling because no matter how prepared you are, it can surprise you in a heartbeat.

Carissa Moore: Totally! I love how you approach those waves with no fear. Speaking of fearless, you’ve been a trailblazer for women in big wave surfing, breaking barriers left and right. How does it feel to see the growing recognition and respect for female surfers?

Keala Kennelly: It’s incredible, honestly. When I started, there weren’t a lot of opportunities for women in big wave surfing. Seeing how far we’ve come is really rewarding. I remember the early days when people thought we couldn’t handle it, but look at us now!

Carissa Moore: Absolutely, it’s been an amazing journey. You’ve always been outspoken about the importance of inclusivity in the sport. How do you think the surfing community can continue to evolve in this direction?

Keala Kennelly: It’s all about visibility and support. We need to keep pushing for equal opportunities, better media representation, and more sponsorship for women and underrepresented groups. Community support is huge, too – encouraging each other goes a long way.

Carissa Moore: I totally agree. By the way, you’ve also made waves with your acting career and DJ gigs. Do you think there’s a connection between riding giant waves and performing in front of an audience?

Keala Kennelly: For sure! There’s this adrenaline rush that’s pretty similar. Whether you’re riding a 40-foot wave or spinning tracks in front of a crowd, it’s all about that intense moment of being ‘in the zone.’ Plus, both require a lot of creativity and courage.

Carissa Moore: That makes so much sense. Okay, last question – what’s the one piece of advice you’d give to aspiring female surfers out there looking to make their mark?

Keala Kennelly: Believe in yourself and never let anyone tell you what you can’t do. This sport is as much about mental strength as it is about physical ability. Keep pushing your limits and just go for it. If you love it, that’s all that matters.

Carissa Moore: Wise words, Keala. Thanks so much for the chat – it’s always inspiring talking with you!

Keala Kennelly: Thanks, Carissa! It’s been a blast. Let’s catch some waves together soon!

Carissa Moore: You know it! Aloha!
