Quinn Hughes Chats with Pavel Bure

Quinn Hughes: Pavel, it’s such an honor to chat with you. Growing up, your highlights were some of my favorite to watch. You were like a rocket on the ice! How did you get that nickname, “The Russian Rocket”?

Pavel Bure: Thanks, Quinn! The nickname actually came from the way I played. I was always speeding around and creating fast breaks. It just seemed natural for people to start calling me that. I see a lot of speed in your game too. How do you balance being so fast with making those crisp passes and plays?

Quinn Hughes: It’s definitely a balance. I focus a lot on agility training in the off-season, and during practice, I work on my vision and passing drills. The game is getting faster, so it’s key to keep up. Speaking of speed, your breakaways were legendary. Do you have any tips for executing the perfect breakaway?

Pavel Bure: Absolutely. It’s all about reading the goalie. You have to decide your move just before you get into shooting range. Patience is key—make the goalie commit first. Watching you, I can see you have great instincts on the ice. Is there a particular defenseman you admire or model your game after?

Quinn Hughes: I really look up to players like Nick Lidstrom and Duncan Keith. They were both so solid defensively and could contribute offensively when needed. It’s a lot to live up to, but I try to learn from their games. By the way, I’ve been trying to improve my goal-scoring too. Any tips for a defenseman looking to up his goal count?

Pavel Bure: For sure! One thing is to always look for opportunities to jump into the play. Don’t be afraid to take a shot from the point, and always keep moving. Even as a defenseman, finding open space and anticipating rebounds can increase your chances. Seeing you play, I think you’re on the right track. Any young players you enjoy watching now?

Quinn Hughes: Definitely! Guys like Cale Makar and Adam Fox are amazing to watch. They’re redefining what it means to be a defenseman in today’s game. What about you, Pavel? Do you keep up with today’s players?

Pavel Bure: I do. Connor McDavid is just phenomenal. His speed and skill are something else. And, of course, I enjoy watching players like you who bring excitement to the game. Keep pushing those limits, Quinn! It’s exciting to see where you’ll take your career.

Quinn Hughes: Thanks, Pavel! It’s been great chatting and getting some insights from a legend like yourself. Hopefully, I can bring even a fraction of the excitement you brought to Vancouver!

Pavel Bure: You’re doing great, Quinn. Vancouver’s lucky to have you. Keep up the hard work and have fun out there!
