An Ice-Cool Conversation: Rebecca Johnston Chats with Hayley Wickenheiser

Rebecca Johnston: Hey Hayley, it’s always a thrill to catch up with you! You’ve been such an inspiration throughout my career. How’ve you been adjusting to life off the ice?

Hayley Wickenheiser: Hey Rebecca! It’s great to see you too. Adjusting has been a whirlwind, honestly. I’m diving into all sorts of new ventures – medical school, Olympic committees, the works. But I miss the ice sometimes, you know?

Rebecca: Oh, I bet! You were always the one pushing the boundaries. How do you find balancing all those roles? It’s like you went from one challenge to another!

Hayley: Ha! Well, you know what they say, a trailblazer’s work is never done. Seriously though, medicine is just another steep hill, like those tough training sessions. Speaking of challenges, what’s keeping you busy these days?

Rebecca: Training, training, and more training! And when I’m not on the ice, I’m working on community engagement projects. I’ve been putting a lot of energy into youth hockey programs. It’s so rewarding to mentor the next generation.

Hayley: That’s fantastic. I remember our time together on Team Canada – those young players just soak up everything you give them. Any budding stars who remind you of a younger Rebecca Johnston?

Rebecca: There are a few! They’re so talented and passionate. And speaking of young stars, remember when we had that fierce rivalry in scrimmages? Those were some fiery times!

Hayley: Oh, absolutely! We never held back, did we? But those battles made us better. It’s that same intensity I see in you mentoring these kids. They’re lucky to have you.

Rebecca: Thanks, Hayley. It’s all about passing the torch, right? You did the same for me. By the way, have you seen any good changes in women’s hockey lately?

Hayley: Definitely. The growth is incredible. More visibility, better support, and young girls dreaming big. It’s a movement we helped start, and it’s amazing to see it flourish. What do you think are the next steps?

Rebecca: Greater investment and more media coverage would be huge. We need to keep pushing for equity on all fronts. Just like those scrimmages – go all out, leave nothing in the tank!

Hayley: Well said, Rebecca. And knowing you, I’m confident you’ll be one of the driving forces. Keep inspiring, and keep those skates sharp!

Rebecca: Thanks, Hayley! And you keep breaking boundaries in medicine. Who knew you’d be just as fierce with a stethoscope?

Hayley: Haha, life is full of surprises! Let’s catch up again soon. Maybe even hit the ice for old times’ sake?

Rebecca: Absolutely, anytime. Take care, Hayley!
