Sarah Fillier In Conversation with Hayley Wickenheiser: An Inside Look at Women’s Hockey
Hayley Wickenheiser: Hey Sarah! It’s awesome to finally get some time to chat with you. Your performance at the Worlds was just incredible. How are you feeling after all that excitement?
Sarah Fillier: Thanks, Hayley! That means a lot coming from you. I’m still on cloud nine, honestly. It’s been a whirlwind, but the excitement hasn’t worn off yet. How about you? Do you still get that rush watching Team Canada?
Hayley Wickenheiser: Absolutely! It’s like my heart is still on the ice every time I watch you all play. The sport has evolved so much since my days, and it’s thrilling to see how fast and skilled the game has become. Speaking of fast, you’ve really turned heads with your speed. What’s your secret?
Sarah Fillier: Haha, well, it’s a mix of a lot of hard work and a bit of genetic luck, I guess! But in all seriousness, I’ve focused a lot on my off-ice training. Speed drills, strength conditioning, and plenty of on-ice practice. It also helps to have great teammates pushing you every day.
Hayley Wickenheiser: That’s the key, isn’t it? Teammates can really make all the difference. I’ve heard you’ve been quite the role model for younger players. How does it feel to be a mentor and inspiration at such a young age?
Sarah Fillier: It’s honestly surreal. I remember looking up to players like you and wanting to be just like you someday. Now, having young girls come up to me and say I inspire them? It’s beyond humbling. It’s also a big responsibility—one I take very seriously.
Hayley Wickenheiser: And you’re doing an amazing job at it! Women’s hockey has come a long way, but there’s still room to grow. What changes or advancements would you like to see in the future of the sport?
Sarah Fillier: Oh, there’s so much potential! I’d love to see more professional opportunities for women in hockey, more leagues, better coverage, and, of course, equal pay. It’s important that the sport becomes more accessible and more visible so young girls everywhere can see that it’s a viable career path.
Hayley Wickenheiser: Couldn’t agree more. And with passionate, talented players like you leading the charge, I have no doubt we’ll see those changes come to fruition. Before we wrap up, any advice you’d give to aspiring young hockey players?
Sarah Fillier: For sure! I’d say never stop working on your skills, both on and off the ice. Stay dedicated, stay positive, and always remember why you started playing in the first place—because you love the game. And don’t be afraid to dream big. If I can do it, so can they.
Hayley Wickenheiser: Fantastic advice, Sarah. Keep shining out there, and I can’t wait to see all you achieve next!
Sarah Fillier: Thanks, Hayley! That means a ton. Always a pleasure talking to a legend like you.
And with that, two generations of hockey excellence share a laugh and a mutual admiration, leaving us inspired and eager to watch the future unfold. Stay tuned for more thrilling moments in women’s hockey!
