An Engaging Conversation with Shugo Imahira and Hideki Matsuyama
Hideki Matsuyama: Hey Shugo! It’s been a while. How has the tour been treating you?
Shugo Imahira: Hideki, great to see you! The tour has been quite a ride, but I’m loving every moment of it. How about yourself? What’s new?
Hideki Matsuyama: Oh, you know, just trying to keep up with these young guns. Your game has really elevated lately. What’s your secret?
Shugo Imahira: Thanks, man! I’ve been focusing a lot on my short game. The greens can make or break your score, you know? Plus, I’ve been working with a new coach who’s really helped me refine my putting.
Hideki Matsuyama: Ah, the short game. It’s always the silent killer. Speaking of which, I saw that insane bunker shot you pulled off last week. Teach me your ways!
Shugo Imahira: (laughs) That was pure luck, I swear! But seriously, it’s all about the practice. I’ve spent countless hours in the bunker, getting a feel for the sand and experimenting with different techniques. You should join me for a session sometime!
Hideki Matsuyama: I might just take you up on that. It’s always good to learn from each other. By the way, how do you handle the pressures of the media and expectations back home?
Shugo Imahira: It can be overwhelming at times, but I try to stay grounded. I remind myself why I started playing golf in the first place – for the love of the game. And my family keeps me centered. Plus, seeing fans’ support always gives me a boost.
Hideki Matsuyama: That’s a great mindset to have. It’s important to stay true to your roots. Speaking of roots, any favorite courses in Japan you always look forward to playing?
Shugo Imahira: Definitely. Kasumigaseki is always a special place for me. So many memories there. Plus, it’s always in pristine condition. How about you?
Hideki Matsuyama: Same here. Kasumigaseki holds a special place in my heart, especially after the Olympics. But I also have a soft spot for Naruo Golf Club. The layout challenges you in every way possible.
Shugo Imahira: Agreed! Each course has its unique charm. So, what’s next on your agenda? Any big goals for the upcoming season?
Hideki Matsuyama: Just focusing on consistency and hopefully snagging a couple of wins. And you?
Shugo Imahira: Pretty much the same here. But more than anything, I want to enjoy the journey. It’s the love for this sport that keeps us going, right?
Hideki Matsuyama: Absolutely! Cheers to that. Let’s catch up more often. Maybe even a practice round together soon?
Shugo Imahira: I’d love that. Let’s make it happen. Until then, keep crushing it out there!
Hideki Matsuyama: You too, my friend. See you on the greens.
