In Conversation with Thierry Boutsen: A Journey through F1 and Beyond
Thierry Boutsen: Hey,
Niki Lauda: Ah, Thierry! The pleasure is mine. These days, I’ve been deeply involved with the aviation business, you know, running Lauda Air. It’s a different kind of thrill from F1, but what about you? Have you still got your head under the hood of some roaring machine?
Thierry Boutsen: You bet! I ventured into the aviation sector too, with Boutsen Aviation. We specialize in buying and selling business jets. It’s fascinating how many F1 drivers find their way into aviation. Must be that need for speed, huh?
Niki Lauda: Absolutely, the speed and precision—it’s in our veins. So tell me, do you miss the days of racing? That adrenaline rush when you see the green lights go off?
Thierry Boutsen: Oh, for sure! Nothing quite compares to the thrill of racing at circuits like Monaco or Spa. Each lap was a mix of exhilaration and terror. Do you have a favorite memory from your racing days?
Niki Lauda: My favorite would have to be the 1976 season, especially the battle with James Hunt. It was intense but also brought out the best in me. What about you? Any particular race that stands out?
Thierry Boutsen: Winning the 1990 Hungarian Grand Prix was quite special for me. It was my last victory in F1, and it came after a challenging race. The feeling of crossing that finish line first was indescribable.
Niki Lauda: Those victories stick with you forever. Speaking of challenges, what’s the biggest difference you see in F1 today compared to our era?
Thierry Boutsen: The biggest change I see is the technology and data analysis. Back in our day, it was all about the driver’s skill and the mechanical setup. Now, the cars almost resemble spaceships with how advanced they’ve become! Also, the emphasis on safety has significantly increased, which is a good thing. How do you see it?
Niki Lauda: I agree. The technology has advanced incredibly, and while it’s made the sport safer, it’s also taken away some of the rawness. The drivers now rely a lot on data and simulations. But at the end of the day, the essence of racing remains the same—pure competition.
Thierry Boutsen: True, the essence remains, and the camaraderie among drivers, that never changes. Anyway, Niki, it’s been great catching up. We should do this more often, maybe over a flight sometime—combine our passions!
Niki Lauda: Sounds like a plan, Thierry! Always good talking to you. Here’s to the need for speed, on the track and in the skies!
