Catch a Wave: A Conversation with Surf Legend Tom Carroll and Kelly Slater
Kelly Slater (KS): Hey Tom! It’s always great to catch up with you. Remember that insane barrel ride you pulled off at Pipeline in ’87? Still gives me chills!
Tom Carroll (TC): Oh man, how could I forget? That was one of those moments where everything just clicked. Pipeline has this way of humbling even the best of us, doesn’t it?
KS: Totally. By the way, you’ve seen some pretty gnarly changes in the surf world since then. What’s your take on the evolution of surfboards? Remember those heavy single-fins we used to ride?
TC: (Laughs) Yeah, those were like trying to steer a boat sometimes. The advancements in materials and design have totally transformed how we approach waves now. These days, boards are lighter, stronger, and way more responsive. It’s like comparing a sports car to a vintage muscle car.
KS: Absolutely! And speaking of evolution, what do you think about the rise of wave pools? It’s a game-changer for the sport.
TC: Oh, wave pools are incredible. They give so many people access to perfect waves and allow us to really hone our skills in a controlled setting. Plus, it’s amazing to see inland communities getting stoked about surfing. How about you, Kelly? You’ve got your own wave pool tech, what inspired that venture?
KS: I wanted to create a space where surfers could train and have consistent access to high-quality waves, no matter where they lived. We’re taking the unpredictability of the ocean out of the equation for training purposes, but nothing will ever replace the raw power and magic of natural surf spots.
TC: True that. There’s something sacred about being out in the ocean. Speaking of which, any big trip on your radar? Are you planning to chase any epic swells soon?
KS: Oh, absolutely. I’ve got my eyes set on a couple of spots in Indonesia. The surf community there is fantastic, and the waves? Unreal. How about you, Tom? Got any secret spots you’re willing to share?
TC: (Grins) You know I can’t give away all my secrets, Kelly. But let’s just say there are a few isolated gems in the South Pacific that always call me back. Maybe we’ll run into each other out there and share a few waves.
KS: That sounds like a plan, mate! It was awesome talking with you. Let’s keep spreading the stoke and pushing the boundaries of surfing.
TC: For sure, Kelly. Keep ripping and inspiring the next generation of surfers. Catch you on the flip side!
And with that, two surf legends part ways, ready to conquer new waves and continue their journey in the ever-evolving world of surfing.
