Tea Time Talk with Vaughn Taylor and Phil Mickelson
Vaughn Taylor: Hey Phil, long time no see! Can you believe all the ups and downs we’ve had over the years? From rookie days to winning on the big stage, it’s been quite the ride for both of us.
Phil Mickelson: Absolutely, Vaughn! Every moment has been a wild adventure. Speaking of which, I still remember your epic finish at the 2016 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. That final round came out of nowhere, man. How did that feel?
Vaughn Taylor: Oh man, that was something else. For a while, I had almost resigned myself to the idea that my best days were behind me. That win kind of felt like lightning in a bottle, but it reminded me that we’re never really out of the game. To be honest, though, I was just focused on keeping my composure the whole time.
Phil Mickelson: Composure is key, for sure. But come on, the nerve that must’ve taken! And the way the crowd just erupted—nothing like it. Speaking of nerves, how did you handle that pressure, especially with a guy like me breathing down your neck? Ha!
Vaughn Taylor: Haha, yeah you weren’t exactly making it easy on me! It’s all about small mental games, I guess. I kept telling myself to take it one shot at a time. Block everything else out. Plus, having my family there for support made a world of difference. They keep me grounded, you know?
Phil Mickelson: Definitely. Family has been a cornerstone for me as well. By the way, I read somewhere that you’re passionate about fishing. How does that tie in with your golf game? Does it give you peace, or is it more about the thrill of the catch?
Vaughn Taylor: Oh, fishing is my zen place, no doubt about it. Whether it’s on the lake or by the river, it’s where I can recharge and find my calm. I think it translates to the course too—helps me stay patient and keep focused. Plus, nothing beats the excitement of reeling in a big catch!
Phil Mickelson: I hear you, Vaughn. For me, it’s all about balance. A little golf, a little family time, a little Trouble-stirring on Twitter, and my day’s complete! Haha. But seriously, we’ve both seen how important it is to have that something extra, outside of golf, to keep us sane.
Vaughn Taylor: Oh, for sure. Balance is everything. I mean, we’re competitors at heart, but you’ve got to remember why you love the game in the first place. Speaking of which, any crazy plans for your next off-season?
Phil Mickelson: Haha, always planning something! Might take a little detour and revisit the world of high-stakes poker. Either that or some off-road adventures. And you, any new fishing spots you’ve got your eye on?
Vaughn Taylor: Actually, I’ve been looking into a secluded spot up in the Rockies—supposed to be prime for trout. Maybe I’ll make it a family trip. Nothing like mixing the best of both worlds!
Phil Mickelson: Sounds perfect. Well Vaughn, here’s to more epic rounds and plenty of fish—and maybe one day, a tournament named after us!
Vaughn Taylor: Haha, cheers to that, Phil! Always great chatting. Let’s catch up over a game soon. Take care!
