Allan Border and Steve Waugh: A Catch-Up Conversation on Cricket, Leadership, and Legacy
Allan Border: Hey Steve, great to catch up! It’s been a while since we last chatted. How’s everything going with you?
Steve Waugh: G’day AB! It’s always a pleasure to catch up with you. Things have been good, keeping busy with some cricket charity events and a bit of commentary. What about you?
Allan Border: Same here, mate. Just enjoying some time off and catching a few Test matches. I have to say, cricket has changed so much since our playing days. What do you think about the new formats and styles?
Steve Waugh: Totally agree, Border. T20 has certainly spiced things up. It’s brought in new fans and changed the way we approach the game. But there’s still nothing quite like a gritty Test match, right?
Allan Border: Absolutely, Steve. The strategy and endurance involved in Test cricket are unparalleled. You know, looking back, our era had its own charm. Leading the Australian team through those tough times was something I’ll never forget. But you took the baton and created an invincible legacy. How did that feel?
Steve Waugh: Thanks, AB. It was an incredible journey, but a lot of that groundwork was laid by you. Your tenacity and leadership were key. I just tried to build on that, instill some confidence, and let the boys play their natural game. Those Ashes series wins were something special, though. Do you have a favorite moment from your captaincy?
Allan Border: The ’89 Ashes series in England, without a doubt. Turning things around from being underdogs to winning the series was extremely satisfying. It was a real team effort. Speaking of team effort, your twin hundreds in that 1997 Ashes—what was going through your mind?
Steve Waugh: It was one of those rare zones, AB. When everything just comes together. The English media was on our case, and I felt a personal need to silence them. It was one of the most fulfilling series of my career. But, talking about today’s game, who do you reckon is carrying forward the Australian grit?
Allan Border: I have high hopes for Pat Cummins. He’s got the talent and seems to really understand the spirit of Test cricket. Plus, he’s got the leadership qualities that remind me of a young Steve Waugh. What about you?
Steve Waugh: Definitely, Cummins is a gem. I also think Marnus Labuschagne’s commitment and hunger for runs are impressive. We need that kind of zeal to keep the legacy alive. Anyway, AB, have you been involved in any mentoring or coaching lately?
Allan Border: I’ve done a bit here and there, mostly offering advice to young players. Sharing stories and helping them understand what it means to wear the Baggy Green. It’s fulfilling to give back. And you, Steve? Any thoughts of coaching?
Steve Waugh: Not full-time, but I’m always happy to help when asked. I think it’s important to pass down our experiences. Who knows, maybe one of the youngsters we mentor today could be tomorrow’s cricket legend!
Allan Border: That’s the dream, Steve. Always a pleasure to chat and reminisce. Looking forward to the next game and our next catch-up!
Steve Waugh: Same here, AB. Take care and let’s plan to meet up for a match soon!
