Andrew Porter Chats with Brian O’Driscoll: Rugby, Training, and More

Brian O’Driscoll: Hey Andrew, great to catch up with you! How’s everything going with the training and matches these days?

Andrew Porter: Hey Brian! It’s been pretty intense, but that’s the way we like it, right? The season’s in full swing now, so we’re all just focused on keeping fit and sharp.

Brian O’Driscoll: Absolutely, the grind never stops! You’ve been an absolute powerhouse in the scrum. What’s your secret to maintaining that level of strength?

Andrew Porter: Haha, no secret really. Lots of hours in the gym and sticking to a solid nutrition plan. And, of course, the awesome support from our physios and coaching staff.

Brian O’Driscoll: I remember those gym sessions. Speaking of which, any personal bests recently? You know, for old times’ sake.

Andrew Porter: Well, I did hit a new PB on the deadlift last week – 330kg. Still chasing that 350kg though!

Brian O’Driscoll: That’s insane! You’re making me feel like I need to hit the weights again. So, how do you balance the physical demands with the mental game?

Andrew Porter: It’s all about finding that balance. I make sure to take mental breaks, get plenty of sleep, and spend time with family and friends. It’s crucial to keep a healthy mind as well as body.

Brian O’Driscoll: Wise words. On a lighter note, any pre-match rituals you’ve stuck by over the years?

Andrew Porter: Oh, definitely! I always listen to a specific playlist before games. A mix of rock and metal to get the adrenaline pumping. And I’m superstitious about putting on my left boot first, every single time.

Brian O’Driscoll: Haha, I can totally picture that. Speaking of music, have you been playing much guitar lately?

Andrew Porter: Yeah, I’ve been jamming a bit more in my downtime. It’s a great way to relax and take my mind off rugby for a while.

Brian O’Driscoll: Nice! Maybe one day we’ll see you perform at a half-time show. Alright, last question – any advice for the young ones looking up to you?

Andrew Porter: Just stay dedicated and work hard, both on and off the field. And never forget to enjoy the game; that’s why we all started playing in the first place.

Brian O’Driscoll: Perfect advice. Thanks for the chat, Andrew!

Andrew Porter: Anytime, Brian! Cheers!
