An Engaging Chat: Anna Meares and Chris Hoy
Anna Meares: Hey Chris, it’s fantastic to catch up! Feels like it’s been ages since we last shared the velodrome. How have you been?
Chris Hoy: Anna! It’s great to see you too! I’ve been doing well, keeping busy with various ventures and enjoying retirement. How about you? You’ve been doing some incredible things since stepping back from competitive cycling.
Anna Meares: Thanks, Chris! Life after cycling has been an exciting journey. I’ve dabbled in everything from broadcasting to motivational speaking. Though, I must admit, there’s nothing quite like the thrill of competition, right?
Chris Hoy: Absolutely, there’s a unique rush to it! Speaking of competition, what would you say was your most memorable race?
Anna Meares: Oh, that’s a tough one. I’d have to go with the 2012 London Olympics. Winning gold in the sprint after that intense rivalry with Victoria Pendleton was unforgettable. The entire atmosphere, the pressure… it was electric! How about you, Chris? Which race stands out the most?
Chris Hoy: Definitely the 2008 Beijing Olympics for me. Winning three golds was surreal. That keirin final, in particular, was the pinnacle of my career. The competition was fierce, and the emotions running high were just incredible. But let’s shift gears a bit—what’s it like being a mom and balancing all your projects?
Anna Meares: It’s a bit of a juggling act, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Being a mom is a whole new kind of adventure, and it’s helped me gain a fresh perspective on life. And finding balance has become an art form! How do you keep that balance with all your engagements?
Chris Hoy: For me, it’s all about time management and staying passionate about what I do. Whether it’s cycling, mentoring young athletes, or working on my car racing projects, keeping that passion alive is key. Any new exciting projects on your horizon?
Anna Meares: I’m actually working on a book! It’s been such an introspective experience writing down my journey, the highs and lows, and everything in between. And who knows, maybe it will inspire the next generation of cyclists!
Chris Hoy: That sounds amazing, Anna! I have no doubt it will be a huge inspiration. It’s always fantastic to see how athletes like us can continue to impact the world even after retiring from professional sports.
Anna Meares: Absolutely, Chris. It’s all about continuing to push boundaries and inspire others. Speaking of which—ready for another fun ride, maybe a charity event? You and me on the track again!
Chris Hoy: You’re on, Anna! Let’s make it happen. Catching up for a good cause sounds like the perfect way to relive those old days. Here’s to new adventures and old friends!
[Both laugh and clink their water bottles, excited about their next venture together.]
